Cross Post - Upgrade/Move Hyper V 2008R2 to Hyper V 2016 Standard

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 box running Hyper-V and hosting 1 VM that I want to upgrade New fresh Server 2016
The server has a RAID 5 set that has the Host OS installed on it.
The VM configuration files set in the default location (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V).
What is the best way ?
Export 2008r2 VM to external device and Import this VM to Windows 2016Thanks!

I think you already have your answer, but are you also going to upgrade your VM as well? Are you going to do an in-place upgrade or are you going to move everything over?

The simple, most direct approach would be to download Hyper-V 2016 from here, and install that onto the bare metal after you've made a backup of the VM.
Veeam can do this easily as it offers bare metal restore capabilities (meaning it should restore without issue to a different hypervisor).

Why not just go ahead and do it both ways? Just in case one medium fails, you have your second.

Just make sure to select Generation 1.

You've already suggested copying the disks off of the hypervisor directly, and you have also suggested backing up the VM with Veeam. I was simply suggesting doing both on 2 different mediums, so that, in case one fails, you have the other medium with your data still intact.
As to your parts earlier, I see where you are going with your hypervisor, blowing away 2008R2 with 2016 Hyper-V. That part is easy and makes sense. What I was asking later was about the OS of your VM. Are you going to in place upgrade that to 2016 or are you going to create a new 2016 VM and move everything over?

Now as a general recommendation (really never do this), don't install Windows Server onto the bare metal, install your hypervisor to the bare metal. In this case Hyper-V.
Apply your licensing to the 2 VM's that you are allowed to create with Standard (and up licensing) then you'll be allowed to move your VM's around every 90 days or sooner for hardware failures etc.
