Grilling is just applying the meat to the grill to cook. BBQ requires a sauce.

nope, going for a language barrier difference.

Personally I'd never call making steaks/hotdogs/sausages/burgers, etc on the grill - BBQ.. yet they do in Germany.

But in writing this I suddenly recall - Europeans put sauce on most of their meats (really specifically talking about steak here), not something that's as common here in the US.

I'll put steak sauce on a steak, but that doesn't make it BBQ. BBQ meats are typically like some of the less appealing parts of the cow. Pork could also be included in BBQ, such as sausage typically.

Grilling is fast with medium to high temps (10 minutes at 375-700) while BBQ is slow and low temps (many hours at 200-225)

IMHO, you cannot really BBQ a steak (Strip/Ribeye), hotdog or hamburger but you can BBQ or Grill a chicken.

BBQ is a specific cooking style that may or may not use a sauce (don't talk about sauce in some states in the south) grilling is another specific type of cooking that's different then BBQ... but when we talk about a summer party we always say BBQ around here even though we are technically grilling.

^^^ This is the correct answer. Time and temperature dictate whether it's grilling or BBQ. Sauce has nothing to do with it (and is a crutch anyway, unless we're talking about wings or something).

If you wanted a slowly cooked, smoked hot dog, it would be a big waste of time, but it would still be cooked via a BBQ method.

I don't think there is any issue with calling a gathering of people where food will be cooked outside a "BBQ", that's pretty common terminology. And a nice reduction sauce on a steak is great... but most "BBQ sauces" are not. But only mustard or vinegar based sauces ever get near my BBQ. That sugary nonsense has no place on good 'Q.

                                            Here's a question for ya'll.

What do you call cooking steaks or hotdogs or burgers on a grill?

                                            Grilling

OK, and what's the difference between grilling and BBQ?

Grilling is just applying the meat to the grill to cook. BBQ requires a sauce.

BBQ is a specific cooking style that may or may not use a sauce (don't talk about sauce in some states in the south) grilling is another specific type of cooking that's different then BBQ... but when we talk about a summer party we always say BBQ around here even though we are technically grilling.

That tells me its a local phrasology thing. thanks.

Local as in "in the English speaking world"? Yes
