Isn't Nest famous for being insecure?

This is my memory - Travis, go back and listen to Security Now.. Steve was basically trashing them for being part of google yet so utterly insecure.

That's kind of how I remember it. Nothing specific, just not living up to Google's reputation and actually doing a lot of harm to them.

I have their thermostat. So far, nobody has been monkeying around with my temperature settings, lol.

The fact that Google hasn't fired the whole lot of them and continues to allow them to damage Google's and Alphabet's rep amazes me!!!

i'm not sure there is anything they could do at this stage to get me to install, let along pay for Nest stuff.
They are basically like Lenovo to me. Dead.

I have yet to really see an IoT company I actually trust. The closest might be the Ring Video Doorbell.

I agree. I dislike Nest both in design and practice. They definitely make Google look worse to me.

@dashrender Yeah, on SpiceWorld I emphasized in the panel the need for security with IoT devices as that should be the main concern with human safety as well.

The problem with IoT is that most of the risks of your devices are to other people.

So no one cares. Making people care about other people is a bit outside of IT scope 🙂 That's why the only answer is legislation that punishes end users.

@scottalanmiller yeah, makes it kinda hard to control with just IT.

Since nearly all IoT issues are consumer, IT really has no input.

I use the outdoor nest cams because the install kit and magnet is better but mostly because the software is so much better.

The alerts, zones and ability to actually catch stuff as it's happening isn't something I've been able to replicate on a non-cloud DVR. I actually catch stuff while it's happening.

I won't put a nest camera in my house though. The garage is as far as let them into my house. Used to have it in kids play room but they are too old for that now, and even then it kinda bugged em. But still, the notifications were just way more useful. Probably a result of all the data they have access too.

The Ubiquiti ones have nice zones and they can be very very sensitive or very not depending on what you want.

@stacksofplates Way to sensitive, I have them running on two locations and I have been adjusting the motion for a while. Right now is better, storage used to be a problem but now my storage is on AWS which is not a problem anymore.

I tried this but it was 2014 or so with all UBNT gear. Not sure if its improved then. That was also the peak of the UBNT home/office automation/sensors gear.

Things could be better now but I would expect them to be worst given their seeming abandonment of that product line for creepy necklace cameras.
