Verizon has placed rather a huge order for fiber optic cable with Corning Glass for millions of miles of fiber to enable Verizon to improve their wireless network.

Gotta love the Verizon side of that story. Not a direct quote "Yeah, it's much cheaper to only run fiber to each distribution point rather than to every home." Didn't mention the amount of money they make on wireless compared to wired connections.
