Are there any plans to actually integrate an email server or just to remain as a client? Not saying that that is my vote either way, just interested in the email roadmap.
So one of the goals of Nextcloud is to be super easy to install. Because of that it is a pure PHP application that is super easy to install. So we can't include a full IMAP/SMTP server. And to be honest there is also no point in reinventing the wheel. A lot of great open source mailservers exists. Just install one of them and Nextcloud can use it.
A single appliance solution would be really great. I see the long term goal of this product competing directly against O365.
Email absolutely should not ever be integrated.
Thread on their forums.
https://help.nextcloud.com/t/nextcloud-mail-server/157Integrated directly, perhaps not, but as a ride-along-side, it would be great.
If I'm using gmail for my email and want to store my files in NextCloud - what's the current solution for that? download the file local, save to NC, open in NC and use LO to edit/view the file? what a huge PITA.
Use the email client on NC, the integration is built in.
Awww - I didn't realize how the email portion of NC worked. OK sounds like they are very close to competing with O365 already... now we just need local application direct integration (as mentioned above) and we'll be set.
From what I've used, it's quite nice and it is nice that you log into NC and have all of that stuff right there. NC is moving heavily to being the central portal that you would use. That's why I'd like to see things like wiki integration or something similar so that we can use it kind of like a corporate intranet.

What type of support does NC have for contacts and Calendars?

We have CardDAV and CalDAV syncing and apps to handle contacts and calendars. So you can share calendars, invite people and all the basic stuff.

@jospoortvliet of course more good things are in development - and as with everything, help welcome

Any chance you're working toward an ActiveSync add-in?
I.e. can the email client connect natively with O365 or Exchange for all of that goodness?

So it would be possible to implement ActiveSync relatively easy by including projects like zpush. Maybe someone does it. But i'm not sure how useful it is to use the Nextcloud Mailinterface with the Office365 backend. But maybe I'm missing the usecase here

Exchange has IMAP natively. So it already works with that natively.

So everybody! It's two hours now, we need to recover from this barrage of questions
Thanks a lot for your input, I hope it was interesting and fun!
I'll keep hanging in the forums and you can always ping me, of course. I just need to lie down now
have a good one!

@jospoortvliet Thanks, loads of info here today!

Does Exchange's IMAP supports calendar and contacts? I was under the impression that the only way to get that from Exchange was AS or CardDAV/CalDAV? and those DAV things aren't real time bi-directional syncing.

We had fun thanks @jospoortvliet @Frank-Karlitschek & @LukasReschke !!!

Back to the SQRL thing for a sec. Where would someone go to start looking at and/or contributing to the code base?

The use case as I see it here is that someone wants to use Exchange email (hosted Exchange) from MS ($4/u/m) but none of the rest of the services.. say they want to have NC in their own DC. So they could use the email client in NC to access Hosted Exchange and have NC right there next to it for file hosting and LO for creating/editing/reading attachments.

IMAP is a standard protocol. There are not "Exchange IMAP" versions or it would not be IMAP. IMAP is a mailbox transport protocol only. It's never attempted to tackle any other functionality nor should it as there are other protocols for that.

But I answered the question. If you ask what IMAP supports, the answer will always be the same. IMAP is a mailbox protocol.

as per @JK74
JK74 about an hour ago
I'm in the Netherlands and as such mo focus is Dutch localized support for our Church members.
I notice now that I'm struggling to get some e-mail templates changed in Dutch Language ; and I see as well other client GUI text still is in English; is there a way we can help or report those defects or is local localization support a low fruit? -
@jospoortvliet Thanks! Is there any release date? Or preview client? It was announced last week but the update is not yet showing up on the beta directory listing. Cheers!

Unfortunately Exchange doesn't implement standard protocols.

2.3 test client should be there, see https://help.nextcloud.com/t/help-testing-the-2-3-0-desktop-client-beta/8932
