Linux and Windows argument
-
As a follow up to my recent thread - I thought I would start another one on the 'Windows or Linux' and an issue that came to light just this morning.
iTunes - It doesn't run on Linux, and many may say you don't need it anyway. There are a number of alternatives to iTunes, and they will work.
However, in the case of my son's iPad this morning - he managed to let the battery die on it last night. My wife takes it with her as there is basketball practice tonight and after she picks all of the kids up, that is where they will be going. But only one is having practice. The Twins will need something to do, thus the iPads.
But on charging his iPad (once there is enough charge) it proudly displays:
So now what do you do? If I drop completely to Linux - something like this would become a rather annoying event. As someone that has five iPads (in use), four iPods and two iPhones, that could get damn right perturbing.
-
Why is it asking for iTunes if all you need to do is charge it?

That kind sir is any excellent question, and one I can not answer. However - there it was...

My biggest Windows argument right now is Gaming. There are some great games that work under Linux, and all of that, and many Windows games can be made to work under wine, but every time I switch back to Linux on my Laptop, I find I am unable to get my current game of choice to play nicely on it.

Yeah but if we took gaming out of the equation I would just a buy a Chromebook for $150. Hard to beat. Apple is overpriced.

What if you hadn't gone with iPads at all? What if you'd used Android tablets?

What if is always a good question. However I have used an iPhone since the 3gs, and iPad since version 1.
There are things going for both the iOS and Android lines,.. My investment now is in the iOS line... And when I started using the 3gs about twelve years ago, I wasn't really all that interested in Linux.

I've never had that happen and we have three iPhones and five iPads and have for many years.

Same here. I've never seen anything like that. Also, who's to say that picture means that it is requiring iTunes to charge? Or how do you know what it means at all? It's a picture of a USB connector and iTunes... is the iPad connected to a computer and charging via a USB connection? It looks to me like iTunes believes there is a USB connection and wants to be opened for management of data.

The ipad booted into a safe mode. It needs iTunes to fix the issue with it.
-
What does that mean? That the iPad won't work until you plug it into iTunes?
What about people who don't own a computer at all? If you reset the iPad, and never associate it with a computer iTunes account, would that solve the issue?

Well that sucks! I guess Art and Scott have just been lucky.

The one bad thing about his is backing up the iPad will require one of those other linux ok programs or a LOT of storage in iCloud (read $$$$)

If you do that, you can always just find someone with iTunes. Sucks to maintain a Windows infrastructure for a once a decade five minute need.

Depends what you are backing up. Other than contacts, what's on an iPad that you need to back up?

depends how you use it. If it's your primary camera (I know crazy huh), then photos... sure you could back them up to google photos...

Right, so the free amount can easily be over run by iDevices today.
it's it only 5 GB free per account? not per device? -

Yeah, but just turn that off
