      @Dashrender @scottalanmiller

Anyways, at my current situation, what I believe to be better is, take the network under domain ASAP.

At top, work out on backing up the data things which is the theme of my post, got lots of ideas here, going through solutions mentioned in thread, most welcome for the replies related to backup software as of now 🙂

On other hand, I need to spin the Linux on VM or physical to test our production software for future use.

Always VM, no benefit to physical. Not for production, not for testing.

Centralized backup is the most helpful in the current situation.

While I don't disagree that a backup solution is best, I would argue that by implementing a backup solution without a domain in this case is only going to prolong this task, and make things more difficult.

I think so, but that alone certainly doesn't suggest that a domain is warranted.

Which you can do without a domain.

Having the domain would simplify the credentials management needed, the setup needed for the backup and restore process, it would make user administration easier.

Sure he could use a solution like PDQ Deploy to push the agent to the clients, and possibly even configuration files if any was needed.

(idk to early in the morning to think about this)

I believe he already said he has an admin username / pw that is the same across all the machines.

He did, this I know and agree would be usable for the purposes of setting up a backup. What this also is, is a security hole that can be easily be taken advantage of. (I've said why above somewhere)

Let's get back to to Willard's question.

Hey why hasn't anyone tried talking the OP out of doing this? You know, the whole "no data on the PC" thing?

Can we move to a scenario where there is no local data? Does the AutoDesk software allow for the local caching of CAD drawings as Dustin mentioned thereby removing the performance issues of network storage? Is this acceptable to the OP? If so, does desktop based backup still need to happen?

Anyways, at my current situation, what I believe to be better is, take the network under domain ASAP.

Is a domain a significant help in this situation?

Didn't @openit say he has over 100 systems?

Centralized backup is the most helpful in the current situation.

                                        I agree with that.

I can understand how easy it would be for me and saves cost too if users can do things from file server, and I just need to bother about backing up from one location.

The point here is performance, which is not acceptable for end users, as it's their production software.

Hey, finally this thread got around to convincing the OP to move data off the local machines! 🙂

IMO Convincing power matters a lot when you are trying to explain technical things to your non-technical manager 🙂 🙂
