Chuwi Hi8 7 month review update

I just want to update my review on the Chuwi Hi8 Android/ Windows 10 tablet that I bought back in March.

After using this device for the first few months I felt like it was a great device for the price. As I started using it less, Windows 10 updates kept coming and made usability a real pain. The tablet comes with only about 6GB free space on the Windows install. You can add a SD card, but you cannot use the SD card in both android and windows since the formatting is different if you use Apps2SD to move all your apps to SD.
For the past few months I have been just using it as android tablet. Once in awhile I will boot up to Windows and just be swarmed with updates to the point where I don't even want to use the tablet anymore.
Was it worth the $90? Yeah I think so. At a minimum it is a great android tablet for the price. It isn't a bad thing to be able to boot to Windows 10 in certain scenarios, but if you plan on doing any type of mobile work make sure you update before leaving the house.

I guess I don't understand the issue?
For $90, I'm guessing the manufacturer isn't releasing OS updates for the Android side of things, so any bug that's found will be there forever. But if you have a bunch of apps installed in Android, undoubtedly those want to be updated after you turn a device on after being off for a while - so I'm not really sure if you're railing against Windows, or just tossing a comment out into the wind?

@IRJ
Thanks for the follow up.I need to review before I ask questions,...

I see a few people have booted it to Linux - Mint.
If I were to get one,.. I may go this route. But as I am currently looking at a new laptop... will have to push that down the road a bit.

It would have to have an AMD64 processor in it to do that. That seems impossible for a phone today.

Android updates aren't automatic and in your face like Windows 10 updates. When you do decide to download updates it can literally drain your battery in half or less by sitting and spinning on Preparing for updates screen. Android updates are pretty quick and safe in comparison to 145 security updates at once.

I suppose all of that is true, but this is a given on a Windows machine - so I'm not really sure what the problem is?

On a pc, laptop, or larger tablet it is no big deal. Let's look at Android vs Windows on an 8 inch tablet. Remember it is an 8 inch tablet so most use is going to be touch screen. I do carry a Bluetooth keyboard and touch pad, but I mostly use then when I want to be completely mobile.
Android
- functions right out of the box with minimal setup
- reasonable updates that are only major and overwrite old updates in order to conserve space
Windows
- constant updates that are automatic by default
- updates save locally and take up a ton of space. They must be constantly deleted
- automatic system restore by default. Which take up a ton of space
- one drive syncs by default. Which is terrible on space.
Can all these issues be resolved? Sure, but do some of them surprise you and pass you off? I've never had issues with disk space since I am usually light on local storage. This is a pain in the ass to deal with. Windows just isn't optimized for low storage tablets. These settings should be turned off by default and you should be offered a cloud backup solution

Lol, this is no different than trying to use a 8 GB Android device. Those things are super painful.
Im just playing devil's advocate here.
As Scott often says. When you choose to use a platform, you need to fully buy into it, or you just end up in a bad way. In this case, the mini tablet appears to need more storage than your device comes with to allow for updates, etc to work as intended.
I have one of these devices, different brand though. It does what I need...
