I am planning to buy a Chromebook. But not to use ChromeOS. I will install a Linux distro onto it. Which brand is recommended? I want a 14 inch screen or larger and I have to choose from Acer or HP? Do I want flash memory or an SSD?

The MOST important part of this decision is the processor architecture. Chromebooks come in AMD64 and ARM varieties. Make that decision first before looking at brands.

The one I have in mind has an Intel chip which should be ok to install a typical Linux distro. Is that correct?

Yes, an Intel Atom or Celeron will run normal AMD64 distros.

SSD is way better for normal Linux.

Just barely. That will be a very tight desktop. My Linux desktop is consuming 39GB of storage right now, not including swap.

@scottalanmiller I plan to install Kali. The ISO is 2.9 GB.

I love my ChromeBook, it is my home PC for 90% of my non development tasks. I love it, but it would choke on any flavor of Linux i would want to use. They are really designed for one purpose, and I would suggest against trying to use it for anything else. That being said, good luck.

@s.hackleman Buying from Walmart. Easy to reset back to ChromeOS and return for a refund.

You could just keep it a ChromeBook... I feel like I always love the tech, that everyone else hates.

Bosch dishwasher FTW. I'm glad I didn't pay for mine, but damn, is it ever sweet. Quiet, too.

I loved my Samsung, until it failed 1 month after the 1 year warrantee. We stopped using it, then realized that hand washing isn't that bad, so we just don't have one anymore.
