New Ubiquiti Unifi Switches

I really dislike all the UniFi line outside of hte UAP.
But that is all based solely on the USG being such a piece of junk.
Maybe the switches work decent.

@thwr Looks like a yes, according to the site. The only way it could get any better would be if they made similar models with POE that would integrate into the UniFi Controller bits.
Would be awesome if they would support some sort of stacking, either soft stacking / logical stacking or "hard stacking" with a traditional daisy chain. Need to buy 4x48 port access switches soon. Just Layer 2, but I will need POE and would love to have a single console to manage them.
Edit: UniFi controller... is that some sort of central management?
Yeah. It's the same software that runs / manages all of the UnFi enabled gear. It's mainly for the APs, though.
Uhm, really? So if I got 4x 48 port access switches + 2 APs I could manage them all from a single point?
But only if you get THESE switches... And these don't have PoE.
So let's hope they are on the roadmap. I've talked to pretty much everyone out there, from Cisco to Huawei and everyone in between, and no one could offer me a real unified system.

Not even remotely true.
The UniFi controller is for manage all UniFi equipment. This is a really basic concept. How can you not understand it and even think to wage an opinion on the hardware?

again with the not knowing what you are talking about... Did you bother to even check the Ubiquiti website?

@thwr They have had PoE for a while, those were first. They are just now adding in the non PoE stuff to both the UniFi and EdgeMax lines.
If you really want the single controller thing, then the UniFi line is the way to go for you.

So the UniFi lines main feature is central management, just judging from the name? I'm more into Cisco / Juniper / Nortel / Enterasys etc, never dealt with Ubiquiti but I'm open to anything new.

Yes, the base hardware is similar (but not exactly the same) from EdgeMax to UniFi.
EdgeMax is more carrier grade in the design concept.
UniFi is the central managed point and click Meraki concept.

Yes, UniFi would remind you of Meraki, but you host your own controller and don't have to deal with an annual charge for owning the gear.

The UniFi line is also more limited in functionality than EdgeMax when it comes to the routers. I have not compared the switches.

Is it not easier to just show me a link that has the PoE switches on it?
I'd certainly love to be more familiar with the Ubiquiti stuff, but I don't have my hands on any of their gear at the moment. I am going by what I have seen others on here say.

We are talking about getting one of the switches for here (Dallas) because we need more switching capacity and it would be a perfect opportunity to test it out. We only need PoE for the tiniest bit (two access points, two or three phones) so the new switches are perfect.

Thanks for that. See. It's easy to teach somebody something every now and again.

Our complaint in the past is that they only had PoE.

UniFi or Edge
UniFi, we have Edge in the datacenter already and like it a lot. Have not been able to play with the UniFi switches yet, only the APs.

Then the recently announced, but not yet easily obtained, UniFi 8 port 150W would be perfect.

Interesting. Will have a look. Noticed that the UniFi Switches don't have SFP+ ports, that may be a showstopper for my specific use case. But I also don't want to spend like 2-4k EUR per access switch, that's why I'm still looking for options.
The point is: I do have a 10G uplink (dark fiber) at that site. It's planned as a shared research lab and all parties there will have their own little server cabinet. Need to bring at least a little bandwith to each party. A bit hard to explain.

I don't care about any routers, I'm a pfSense junky

Two of the SFP are SFP+ on the PoE model.
