I have a really weird issue.

I shut down a bunch of stuff on my work machine in MSCONFIG. I then proceeded to run over 200 updates on the machine. Well, I realized a few of the things I shut down are more needed than I realized, so I went to re-enable them. However, I am finding myself unable to...

I open MSCONFIG from the cmd prompt (run as admin) and try to select Normal Startup, but when I hit apply, it just reverts to selective startup. I try enabling all on the startup screen, but it does the same thing. I thought about rolling back but in all their infinite wisdom, system restore was either turned off, or never turned on.

Windows 7 Enterprise x86 (don't ask me why...)
      McAfee VSE, DLP and HIP

I've tried using Autoruns but it doesn't show anything besides a couple of Office plugins as disabled. I am feeling like I'm out of options...thoughts?

What is disabled that doesn't stick, when you ask it to?

@thanksajdotcom Did you figure this out? If not, list what isn't working. What does it say in the event logs?

Sorry AJ, but that is a rookie mistake you should only make once. This is the first time you hosed a machine and system restore was turned off. If you are doing 200 updates you HAVE to make sure you have a restore point.

Stop trying to be fast and be thorough.

I know you are a good tech, but in IT accuracy is always more important than speed.

Get the machine re-imaged with the most recent image.

I absolutely agree. And this was a rookie mistake on my part. I should have confirmed system restore was enabled and turned on before I ran the updates. Not a mistake I'll make again. Silly of me to assume they would have it enabled...usually I'm more careful. Live and learn.

Yeah, we have an image for the desktops for the users. However, I was told by my co-worker that he doesn't know of an image that WE have for our laptops, which seems odd and strange to me...so working on that...

I mean, worst case scenario, I have to go through and make scheduled tasks for all the services that won't turn back on, so that I'm basically duplicating all those same start-ups. I can do it. It's just a pain in the ass.

Usually that is me. Especially around here. Most of what I do is so routine I can do it basically in my sleep. But on my machine I have a lot more freedom, and I have been sick and kind of out of it, so I just got a little sloppy...ugh...

It's a Lenovo T420, and I disabled a few of the Lenovo services, which also unfortunately disables things like the battery status, wifi, etc. I think part of the problem might be the McAfee. I was testing something and turned off the startup of a couple of the McAfee items, but the services still run. I think that something on that end might be blocking me re-enabling them, so it might be McAfee blocking me from fully re-enabling itself because of "security".

                              Big surprise there.

Lenovo, McAfee... this is going downhill quickly! 😉
