I have one on a USB stick here in my office

Maybe that's the original one for this one 🙂 Well that makes things easy. It's an ISO image?

It will likely need to be an HP OEM image... I don't think VL or Retail media will work with OEM keys, will it?

It just needs to be OEM media, not the actual OEM media.

But not using the actual OEM media is against the rules.

Then Microsoft should fix it so that the OEM key only works with the same OEM manufacturaer..... IE: An HP OEM key will only work with an HP OEM ISO / Media.

For personal stuff, I refuse to play by anal rules like that.

There is no actual OEM media.

Did that laptop come from HP with windows installed?

If so then there is to OEM media somewhere.

Yes it did, and not that doesn't mean that. It's imaged by a central system. OEMs don't install from media.

No but it means you can purchase recovery media from HP to be "legit".

Do you have the HP recovery partition still on this system?

Just a dumb question, but worth asking.

Try this link for ordering the recovery media.

No time to order, I'm sure. Only a few days left for the upgrade.

It is fine to do it this way. Just have to make sure you have the drivers all downloaded etc. when you do the reinstall on it.

Do you know/have the Windows 7 key? On devices that old, they were not always embedded yet.

If so, just install Windows 10 R1511 and enter the key. It should activate.

YOu can also grab the GenuineTicket.xml from inside Windows 7 and activate the upgrade rights that way

                                            1. Open the Windows 10 ISO inside Windows 7.
                                            2. Navigate to sources folder.
                                            3. Copy gatherosstate.exe to your desktop
                                            4. run it as admin
                                            5. copy the resulting GenuineTicket.xml to a USB drive or something.
                                            6. Install Windows 10 clean.
                                            7. After getting logged in the first time, copy the xml file to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\ClipSVC\GenuineTicket
                                            8. Reboot.
                                            9. Windows 10 will be activated with the digital entitlement.
