Anyone know about six sigma?
-
I've never understood putting Six Sigma and Lean together. Aren't those polar opposites? Six Sigma is all about high overhead and loads of unnecessary process while Lean is about, well, getting lean.
-
Six Sigma isn't about high overhead, Six Sigma is a disciplined, data-driven approach and methodology for eliminating defects (driving toward six standard deviations between the mean and the nearest specification limit) in any process – from manufacturing to transactional and from product to service.
-
Simply meaning, through data capturing you get to a better more performing business line, with a better product.
Metal shops very often strive to be SS certified.

That's just another way of saying overhead... especially when it is not applied to manufacturing and "defects" don't have a direct meaning. Even in manufacturing it is more complicated than that. I grew up around Six Sigma because my dad was doing that through much of my childhood.

As a trained industrial engineer that's where I disagree. That can happen, but it often doesn't. Data collection is a form of overhead and that's the only part that is guaranteed.

Just wondering how does this help on practical scenarios in IT? I've also seen companies asking for PMP or Printe2 certifications for some IT managerial role. I would understand when they ask for ITIL which is service oriented, may be PMP/Prince2 for IT or project basis? How many of us use these on their day to day activities or to improve overall IT in their companies

It does not. It is absolute insanity and I have literally turned down jobs or interviews just for suggesting something so ridiculous. It's a manufacturing thing and has some moderate sense in that circle. Applying manufacturing process improvement and measurement to IT is stupid to a level that I can't even fathom. It means that the managers involved don't just not understand IT, but don't understand management or manufacturing either.

more confused managers. PMP is for project management, not IT management.

I've been getting a crazy amount of recruiters emailing me about Six Sigma. Was starting to get curious what all the fuss was about.

That's similar to asking for ten years experience on Windows 2016. Instant dust bin if they say things like that.

Yeah I didn't really know what it was. I finally just started blocking people. I got like 5 emails just today about it and job openings but they're all in the same category as spam as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah, bad recruiters are never going to have good job listings, better to bin them immediately than always spinning your wheel trying to determine which ones might be legit or not.

You mean you don't have 10 years of experience on server 2016 yet?!

Well I do, yeah. But you know, normal people.
