Want to Up Vote a Thread but Not the Poster

But the only thing I can do is +1 MLNews, which, as far as I understand it, ups MLNews reputation, which wasn't my goal.
It does up that, but it ups it as an artefact of you saying that the thread is one that you like. MLNews' reputation is based on the quality of the posts made. So if you want to show that MLNews has posted something valuable but don't want MLNews to be shown as having done that it doesn't appear to conceptually make sense.
-
Reputation = Number of Posts that people feel have value.
So wanting one side of the = without the other doesn't make clear sense.

Why not?
I sorta understand what you mean, but that's only because a thread itself doesn't have a value ranking right now. Not saying we really need one.
I could have just as easily posted a +1 in the thread to indicate that i liked that specific thread.

No, that would not increase the thread vote. There are ONLY votes for posts, nothing else. Threads are just initial posts (OPs.) That's all. There is only one way to vote for a thread, and that is to vote for the OP of that thread. Anything else is voting for something else or not voting at all.
-
A vote for a thread is not a vote for the poster. The poster reputation is just a cumulation of their voted threads or posts.

I didn't say it would increase the thread vote, all it would do would add to the post count. Post count is typically the number one indicator of a popular thread. But this give a huge disadvantage to new threads.
But is voting for the OP really voting for the thread? or just voting for that single post in a thread?

It represents the volume of conversation to be had on a topic but has no relationship to upvoting which is representative of how much someone likes the content. One is about how much it is liked, the other about how much discussion there is which is more likely if the topic is unliked or controversial. The two are totally different.

Both as the two are literally the same thing.

I am still at a lost about why we use the MLNews account. What purpose does it serve?

Same as news posting accounts on other communities. A means for a generic account for posting news items.

It would be less of a problem if Scott did better about not mixing up his tabs.

That's true. But I do keep them straight most of the time.

Most of the time, yes.
