Russia to Ban Windows, Move to Linux for All Government Systems
-
In a sudden move Russia has announced that it will be developing its own version of Linux and will be running it on all governments computers, replacing Windows. The government says that it has 22,000 municipalities prepared to switch over.
This comes after several months in which major governments like India's have made similar moves.

Better performance
Greater security
Lower cost of ownershipDid a Government actually choose to do the smart thing for once?

I have a question though. What's the reason for developing it's own distro? Why not just use one of the major existing ones? I have a hard time believing they will be able to secure their own as much as the big companies.

I'm sure the KGB will be part of the process, same as the NSA gets involved with Microsoft

Much harder to do with open source since people could compile stuff themselves.
