How hard is it to get the right software?
-
OK I'm trying to get an iLo key to unlock some additional features on my HP Server.
So I send a note to my vendor - hey I need the iLo key for my HP DL380 G8 server.
So I get a quote back which I only notice that it says iLo and I approve the purchase.
I get a license key a few days later and I try to install it - but no.. it's not an iLo key for my server, it's an iLo key for Insight Manager to manage the iLo on a server - UG!
So I spent 1 hour on the phone with HP support trying to find the right thing. Which lead me to this page.
So I called my vendor, asked them to start the return process and to quote me the unit listed on that page for iLo Essentials ($153 for 3 years support). I received the quote and placed the order.
I check the quote, it's forHPE Integrated Lights-Out Essentials - License + 3 Years 24x7 Support - 1 server - for ProLiant ML310e Gen8
and matches the price - so it looks like exactly what I want this time.
Admittedly when I looked at the first quote, it did mention Insight - but having never purchased one of these before I wouldn't have thought anything of it even if I had specifically noticed that wording last time.
Today, I get a physical package (weird, all I need is a license key). This package requires me to enter a provided Entitlement Order Number into HPE's website and associate it with my HPE account - ok fine. Then the site offers me a *.KEY file. iLo does not take key files, it just wants the actual numbers typed in. Luckily this is just a text file, so I open it up, extract the number... and of course - it fails again!
So now I'm on the phone again with HP support.
They've asked me if the Entitlement letter indicates iLo 3 or 4 - of course the letter doesn't say either!
They want me to call the iLo department, but can't provide me a phone number. Clearly my vendor can't help me, they've already sold me the wrong product twice.

I have pinged a few HP resources including @HPEStorageGuy

I really hate running to people like Priscilla when I have these problems.
At the same time I'm glad they are there when we need help.
-
I'm trying to get some help - this is outside of my expertise. Stay tuned.
And note that with the separation, Priscilla will have a hard time helping with HPE issues. I'm sure she still has contacts but I'm also guessing her management wants her to focus on HP, not HPE.

Good point - I didn't know where she ended up. I haven't reached out to Priscilla yet - I'm trying to go through the support options typically available still - but I'd love any help you can provide as well.

I went asking for help and got back this HPE iLO Licensing Guide that just went live this morning. Again, since I'm out of my league here, let me know if this helps.
-
BTW, do you have a Case ID with HPE Support?

She went with HP in the split, she is not with HPE.

Can you confirm your model number? There should not be a DL380 G8, it should have an "e" or "p" designation too.

You are correct. It is a DL380p
So according to Priscilla, the essentials license is not good for the "p", but only for the "e" model. SIGH!
I only want the ability to mount a DVD ISO remotely! I don't need/want all those other options.. but FINE! I'll buy them if I must.. but at this point, only after I have my current two POs canceled from my vendor.

Damnit!
Available exclusively on all HP ProLiant Gen8 e-series servers, HP MicroServer Gen8 and HP ProLiant Gen9 100 series servers and below.
That reading thing biting me in the ass!

Yeah, sadly, they are different systems. The "e" are the old DL1xx line and the "p" have always been the 3xx line. They merged some stuff and I think that it made it more, rather than less, confusing.
Very important not to truncate the product name as people start making assumptions about which you have. P would be the common assumption, but sounds like someone figured SMBs were using the non-enterprise models.

I didn't truncate it on purpose. I have older DL380 G5's and they don't have a letter after the number, so I guess I musta stopped looking after the number on this one.
I know I can blame no one but myself at this moment - but damnit, there is a HUGE table on that page that shows me exactly what I want, and nothing obvious that says - HEY not every option is available on every server. So I didn't even read the paragraph above the graph - I saw the graph say Essentials gives me Media access and I moved forward - damnit.

Ok - here's what I hope is an immediate workaround to your license issues. Go download the bits from here and get the 60 day evaluation license. That will get you working and give you breathing room to figure out what's up with the license.
Log in with your HPE Passport to download the eval license and note the download for the installation instructions.
In the Server quickspecs the DL380p G8 are available here. In that document, you're looking for the Advanced iLO license. Note there are different SKUs for the licenses so pick the one that you need. Here's what is on that page:
So I think the one you want is BG505A (I think you're in the US, right?). If I understand, you'll get an email with the license key.

Fantastic.. thanks!

Folks
Sorry you had to run around to get the right license. I agree with @HPEStorageGuy suggestion on using BD505A, use this if you need a paper license. If an Electronic license is ok please E6U59ABE, this is available in the US as well. I am working on getting the Quickspecs corrected as well as the iLO webpage will be updated to indicate the servers that are supported for a specific license.
If you have any questions related to iLO please don't hesitate to contact me @ [email protected]

@iLOguy welcome to MangoLassi!

@iLOguy Nice to hear that someone is correcting the docs, don't always see that happening.

Agreed, though I have to admit, the page wasn't wrong, just obscured.
