Getting Deepin 2015 Installed on a Scale HC3 Cluster
-
Deepin Linux is an interesting Chinese distro that is purely targeted at the desktop. Deepin is built from Debian and has a completely fresh, unique desktop environment of its own. Deepin 2015 is the latest release and I have been interested in getting it up and running for a while.
First we make the VM, easy enough.

Now once we fire up we are going to come up to this screen. You might think that the install has failed. But no, it is just a really slow cursor. Give it a while, and I mean a long while. I gave it several days, in fact. There is something up here that is causing some distros to stop and wait for something at this time, but it is unknown what it is. I have reached out to Scale and they have been looking into it. There is a known delay in specific circumstances but the delay with Deepin takes it to a completely new level.

Once we finally get past the delayed cursor screen we eventually get to a screen asking for our installation language. Unfortunately I was unable to screen shot that screen and I am not going through the pain of getting back to that point. But after that we have just a few, simple, graphical, attractive screens and we have an installation.

We reboot and... we are back to the slow cursor screen. I will report back with a look at the OS itself once it fires up. So things are not without their problems here, but the installation looks to be very attractive and simple and does work, just way too slowly.

It's from China - has anyone checked the code for spyware?

It's open source, probably a number of eyes on it. It's not closed in any way and not from the government.

I know China was working on a version many years ago - wasn't sure if this was related.

That's Red Flag Linux, they have been using that for around a decade.
