Why do so many home users need an office suite at all? I mean I realize that they tend to and I know why I always have, but for normal home users it feels like a strange thing for them to actually use. What are people generally doing with it?

In Mexico, most people think their computer is incomplete if they don't have an office suite installed. They easily spend 98% of their time using only a web browser but since many people down here pirate software, especially MS Office, why not have it installed. They actually believe its free.

Outside of school, though, do any of us know non-IT people using Excel for budgets?

Also for lists, things like that.

Yeah many people could use something like Evernote or Onenote, but they still keep track of stuff using excel spreadsheets or word documents.

School Papers in Word, Personal Budgets in Excel... Home Loan Caculations (also in Excel)...

Those are the first ones that come to mind.

Yea, I actually do, lol. Been trying to get him into ClearCheckbook for years.

I was a project engineer for a heavy highway company, and one of the other engineers did all of his home budgets in Excel. That's the only person I know of though.

I just prefer to use accounting software though.

I used Excel for budgets and things, way before being involved in IT.

                    Americans mostly think that too.

I never see non-tech people using tools like Excel for that, though. Maybe accountants.

That's what I would expect, personal accounting software is generally cheaper and easier to use for that than Excel.

Or free in the case of GnuCash and TurboCash

Exactly. And those are not the only free options either. I mean when serious business tools like Wave are free, why not just use the all out business ones!

@scottalanmiller Is there any concern with GZoogle Docs, and them "looking" at your stuff?

                              Or is that urban legend?

I see they'll do a BAA now, so they can't be doing it much.

As far as I have heard it was the free accounts that were tracked. I don't know if that's changed, but I'm guessing to get HIPAA compliance you would need the paid versions.

Edit: This article shows the terms of service saying that Google doesn't use Drive data for marketing.

                                http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-secure-are-your-documents-in-google-drive/

However, I still don't know about HIPAA with the free accounts.

You definitely need a paid account for HIPAA. Or rather for them to sign a BAA.
