We now have Ads!

@IRJ I don't mind ads on any website as long as 1) Those ads don't pop up to the middle of the screen, cover the screen and make me click the "Go away" link, or pop up from the bottom when I am trying to read... or 2) Trying to cram malware onto my computer... or 3) Flash ads... or ...4) Any ads that play sound without me clicking on them specifically...
I like Ads how ML is trying to do them, off to the side, big enough to be seen and noticed. I wouldn't even mind ads showing at the top of the page, beneath the post title. Anything other than the sides, top, and bottom (as long as they don't pop up) are fine.

I think from seeing these that a bottom ad is like to to come along as well, since they load AFTER the rest of the page it should have no impact on reading and responding, which is a huge concern, and would be visible when people scroll to the bottom rather than when at the top like the current one. Need to do testing. Right now, though, we are testing ad rotation, which is not working at all.

One nice things about the new ads offsetting the main forums. I can now "dock" my chat windows to the side without them covering anything (but the ad) up.

Speed is so good on this site, I don't see it being an issue. I agree that ads served by a service like adsense would be nice on the bottom, while you keep your sponsored ads on the top.
IMO it is the most viable solution for GroveSocial moving forward and would help alot in the process of MangoCon and ultimately community members would get a better deal.

Hopefully there will be a MangoCon ad!

I am learning about adsense and affiliate programs now. I have taken a couple classes and done a bunch of research.

I think the biggest benefit vendors are going to have with advertising on ML is the vetting process. If they are advertising here chances are they are going to be ads for products the user of this forum have heard of or are already asking questions about and recommending. This could be huge in people actually buying/trying those products.

I agree. Obviously sponsored ads have a better Click Through Rate, but Google Adsense also serves relevant ads based on browsing history. Both would work well in tandem.

What makes ML really of interest to potential ad customers is less that the site is full of their potential customers - but that it is full of the potential influencers of their customers. ML is a very influence-heavy community and getting eyeballs and recognition here can go a very, very long way even if the direct product purchases are not coming from here.

We have officially opened ads to multiple vendors, pricing went out to vendors today! Hopefully you will start seeing a variety of different ads soon. As vendors start taking us up on the offer to advertise, we will be able to offer you the community more! Including faster infrastructure to run the platform on, and a full time REAL community manager!

oooh, who will be first (after xByte)? I reckon Webroot or Unitrends

Unitrends Maybe. I've never seen Webroot advertise much.
