Slack isn’t worried about Microsoft’s big Teams push

Slack’s CEO compares Microsoft’s Teams bundling to Google+
Microsoft revealed last week that it now has more than 13 million people using its Microsoft Teams chat software, a milestone that means the app has overtaken Slack.

It's hard not to agree. Actual engagement is the only thing that matters.

Actually, it's businesses being willing to pay for the service is all that matters.

It’s not something you pay extra for since it’s bundled with O365.

      You are.

If you want Slack, it's not because you also want Google Sheets or Zimbra email with XYZ. It's because you want Slack because of what business needs it covers.
Slack is $6-$12 per user per month.

      745bbcc0-e244-444c-8022-3194fa2bc875-image.png

If you just want MS Teams (which is a legit need by the way), too bad, you also have to pay for other stuff you may or may not need or use.
MS Teams will cost you $5, which is cheaper than Slack, which does NOT include Office or Office Suite, but does include Exchange... whether or not you need it. To get Office, it's a minimum of $12.50 for Business Premium (< 300 users). Otherwise, you're buying enterprise O365 licenses which just goes up.

We switched from SFB/Teams to slack plus. Waste of money IMO. I didn't like either of them because I don't like chat for work.

I like it because chatting via email is dumb. Email is really abused and extremely inefficient for most of what it's typically used for within most organisations.

True. However, if you are the only person doing all of IT for 100 users and don't have a ticketing system, chat is an interruption and the presumption is that it is an instant response. No way can I instantly respond based on my workload.

That isn't why companies get teams or slack. Totally incorrect use case for chat. It's a collaboration tool, not a customer/user support tool.

Right. But then that is all they use for communication. At least, here, that is the case.

It works well where I am. The ticketing system and service desk is for support, slack is for collaboration and such.

In your case, you'd probably not use it much unless you are working on designing an IT solution with another department or other IT team members.

Yeah. So, that is why I don't want to use it. People want to use it for instant messaging when they have a question about some random shit like, my screen sometimes turns off and I have to press the power button to turn it on again.

@MattSpeller Yeah, the IT watchdogs appliance also has the ability to add water/flood sensors. I have one of those connected too. That scenario would be one of the worst. Fortunately, we don't have freezing winters here.

FAA tells airlines MacBook Pros with defective batteries can’t fly
      https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2019/08/faa-bans-some-15-inch-macbook-pros-with-battery-problems-from-flights/

The Federal Aviation Administration has banned certain 15-inch MacBook Pros with potentially defective batteries from US flights. The move, which follows Apple's June recall announcement, is part of a general FAA policy on devices with defective batteries.

"The FAA is aware of the recalled batteries that are used in some Apple MacBook Pro laptops," FAA spokespeople said in emails to Ars Technica. Under FAA policy, affected MacBook Pros are banned from the passenger cabin and from checked luggage.

Wondering why Meraki Systems Manager MDM (Free) has screwed me a second time. Why did it just update the iOS-specific profiles, including the ActiveSync profile on all my iOS devices, wiping out the ActiveSync settings and all contacts mail and calendar items??? Seriously, Meraki, WTF?!

I have vCenter Server 6 running on Windows and I just patched my 3 ESXi 6 hosts to bring them to Update 1b. Do I need to do anything to my vCenter Server installation? I can only seem to find mentions of updating the vCenter Server Appliance.

I found this, but I am not sure if this is the only thing I need to do.

      http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-60/index.jsp#com.vmware.vsphere.upgrade.doc/GUID-D4544ADE-ABF4-4E7B-B8BF-FB37FC100B4A.html

Update the Java Components and vCenter Server tc Server with VIMPatch

You can separately update the Java version of all vCenter Server components depending on JRE server by using the VIMPatch ISO file.

You can apply the patch without reinstalling the vCenter Server components. The patch delivers updates for JRE.
      Prerequisites
■Download the Java Components patch from VMware downloads page at https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/patch. The name format is VMware-VIMPatch-6.0.0-build_number-YYYYMMDD.iso.
■Stop any vCenter Server component operations, as when you apply the patch, all running services will be stopped.
      Procedure
1-Mount the VMware-VIMPatch-6.0.0-build_number-YYYYMMDD.iso to the system where the vCenter Server component is installed.
2-Double-click ISO_mount_directory/autorun.exe. A vCenter Server Java Components Update wizard opens.
      3-Click Patch All.

The patch checks whether the Java components are up to date and silently updates them if necessary.

How Much Would You Spend on Streaming Services Per Month?

A PCMag survey of 1,001 US streaming subscribers found that customers would pay an average of $33 per month for all their streaming services combined. From Apple TV+ and Disney+ to HBO Max, there will soon be more apps competing for that budget than ever
The next wave of video streaming services will crest in November with the launches of Disney+ and Apple TV+, and consumers will the faced with the first of many decisions over which apps are worth devoting another another couple bucks each month to streaming content. PCMag recently surveyed 1,001 US consumers who currently use streaming services, the majority of whom said they don't plan on subscribing to any new services, whether Disney and Apple's offerings, HBO Max, or NBCUniversal's forthcoming app. We also polled respondents on how much they'd be willing to pay for streaming content per month, both for an individual service and as a monthly total.

      Let's see:
      Netflix - $15
      Hulu - $13
      Disney+ - $4.25
      Total = $32.25...

Now that game of thrones is over, I'm not sure I'll ever bother with HBO again, though I could possibly see dumping Netflix for a month, picking up HBO, bing the new show, then reversing it.
Not willing to pay for CBS online - screw that noise!

Just $28 for me, no Disney+. And we use the cheap Hulu option. So I think more like $23.

      +10$/month for me for Prime.

I constantly forget about prime, but I have prime for shipping, not because of the shows - I so RARELY watch anything on Amazon.

Same here, we have it already and don't get it for the video, so we don't include it as we don't care.

Prime has good content. I like a lot of their originals. The only thing I don't like is that they lump the shit you have to pay for (rent/buy) in with the included with prime.

So after a cross-post on SW (thanks JeffNew1213), I got the answer to my question. Simply mount the latest vCenter server ISO, run the installer and you will be prompted to upgrade. Also do the same for update manager. I also had to clear cache and cookies in Firefox to successfully login with my AD credentials.

I have been wearing DVS for several years. The ones I currently wear should have been retired a year ago but they are mostly comfortable. The ones I got to replace them (another pair of DVS) need to be broken in and I wore them once and didn't get the lacing tight enough so I just stuck with these (instead of just tightening the lacing).

2 weeks ago I was replacing a power steering hose on my STi and dripped some ATF on the top of them. I should just bite the bullet already.

Fedora 31 Release Held Up By Installer + DNF Bugs
      https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Fedora-31-Release-Delayed

*Fedora developers had been trying to ship Fedora 31 for their original release target of next Tuesday, 22 October, but that isn't going to happen due to remaining blocker bugs.

At today's meeting they decided F31 is a "No-Go" due to open issues.

Among the blocker bugs at this point are upgrade issues over libgit2.so.28()(64bit) not being found, a DNF exception around armv7hcnl, a dnf-yum upgrade issue from Fedora 30, dnfdragora having complaints about a locked process after updates, and a Fedora 31 KDE Live graphics issue when booting in BIOS mode, among other proposed blockers.*
