I don't see how. As far as his router is concerned, it's just another device. Also, I don't have my own apartment or meter. I'm a resident at the same address as him, and I pitch in towards some of the bills.

Is he a landlord or do you co-rent? That's the different. If you pay rent, and he resells the service to you, he's reselling something.

That you are "just another device" isn't relevant. It has to do with his ability to resell a non-commercial service.

I give him money and I get to stay in his backroom, but I don't have my own residence, meaning utilities in my name, my own address, etc. It's really a friend helping another friend and I pitch in towards their food bill, heat, etc. I just contribute towards living here. My "rent" is only 325 a month. He's not reselling anything. I'm a resident of this address.

Plus won't watches likely be heavily abused compared to, say, a laptop?

I am sure the lease will be written unfavorably for the customer. People are desperate to get ahold of the watches. People accepting insane terms would not surprise me.

It can only be so extreme before people, even dumb people, shell out $350 to just buy one. No matter what, they need a LOT of watches for this to work.

You are underestimating the fanboys and the stupidity of the people.

      Especially for Apple.

I didn't say that. There are stupid android people too.

Oh I totally agree. But when the newest Galaxy phone comes out, you don't see people literally camping outside the $carrier store. However, new iPhone release? It's tent city outside the Apple store.

Just got off the phone with Microsoft support... got a new/refurb Surface Pro on warranty from them... was shipped with a broken image and a banned key... now I can't activate it and the first tier person basically accused me of pirating Windows and told me some of the punishments that could come along with it... They were flabbergasted when I told them the device (and image) were directly from Microsoft.

Makes me wish we had a volume license agreement for Windows...

      Auditing is not something official.

Depends on the compliance. There are many of them that I've had to follow that audit. If you don't comply your systems have to be taken offline til fixed.

Yes, but "auditing" is just a random term. Like saying that "no admin will do X". But there is generally not just an admin who will, but many that will swear by it.

Official audits, often, are very insecure. You do them to pass a cert, not to be secure. So while yes, there are "official" audits for things like PCI compliance, you don't use them when you want to just be audited for security. If you are doing a security audit, Chrome might easily pass and IE not. Windows itself might not even pass, but normally would. If you have audit backed by a vendor trying to make a buck or an auditor that is just using checkboxes, any random thing might or might not be allowed.

But it is very important to not connect the actions of one audit with another. Many audits are at odds with each other. I've certainly been through audits that require things that would fail a more common audit process.

    • Suddenly Can't RDP

So I RDP to my home computer over my Pertino connection to use Chrome primarily because my work computer is incapable of running smoothly if I have Chrome open with all the tabs I use. Well, I rebooted a few minutes ago and can now no longer RDP to my home laptop. I can ping the Pertino interface. If I SSH into my jump server, I can ping it locally as well. I can open it in Teamviewer and see it's working. I made sure the RDP settings haven't changed. It just suddenly stopped working. I also can RDP to one of my other machines on the same network, but cannot RDP from that machine to my home laptop either. I'm going to check Windows Firewall next but this is just weird. I did run a couple Windows Updates but not sure what would have changed...

EDIT: Ok, that was weird. Just tried it again and now I can RDP again no problem. Not sure why it wasn't working. Disregard thread.

You could always call AT&T and ask them why there connection doesn't work well when you illegally download torrents. Also could ask them why sharing connections between two people isn't working well. They'll be glad to set you up with another account or even a businesses connection. Heck since its FiOS they probably have a way of doing two connections over a single fiber drop .

Why does torrenting have to be illegal? Just answer the question, not an answer in relation to AJ.

You can't expect something to work properly when you are using it in many was outside of the TOS and you don't legally have access to the router either.

Nothing I'm doing is illegal or against TOS.

Most of the time that people argue with me trying to get me to admit I'm "wrong", they don't even realize that they are fighting the wrong fight. On most things, it's not that I'm fighting that I'm right. I'm just trying to explain that when the information I have goes into my head, the output is not what they're getting. My conclusion is not always right, although it many times has been. My conclusion is how my mind interprets the data and determines the result of the problem presented. Take it for what you will.

What's technically allowed versus what your ISP actually cares about is totally different. In my opinion, if the ISP doesn't care, even if it's outside the official TOS, why should I?

So, your moral compass is completely dependent upon what someone else thinks? If you're with a group of people breaking the law, you're okay with it because they are? If you visit a country where having sex with kids is allowed, you're okay with it because they are?

Your decisions are yours. You know you are breaking the TOS here. You know you are breaking the MS license talked about before. Just because you haven't been caught and probably won't be caught changes nothing. Your moral compass is broken. Admit it and move on, breaking whatever rules you feel you can get away with breaking.

And, while doing that, go on and wonder why your IT career seems to keep falling apart each and every time you seem to get a decent job.

No it is not. I take what others think and feel into consideration, combine it with my own views, and proceed accordingly.

I am also a big picture thinker. In the large scheme of things, does using a key in the cloud instead of locally when it's legitimate locally, but technically not in the cloud going to hurt anyone? No. Did anyone die, lose a job, go without food, or suffer some other harm? No. I don't even think of this in the same way as I do speeding on the highway. When you speed, there is a higher risk you could lose control and hurt someone, or worse, kill someone. You could harm yourself or wreck your car and then have no ride to get to work, etc. Still, most people do that every day.

In the grand scheme of things, it's small potatoes. You say my moral compass is broken. I just choose what things I'm going to choose to exert energy caring about, because I don't have the energy to spare worrying about little, inconsequential stuff anymore.

I see. So, it's all about whether you think it matters or not. The fact that these things do matter, to others, isn't relevant to you because your 'big picture thinking' is more important than the actual written laws.

      Good luck with that.

I want a New 500/512GB SSD, Ubquiti Edge Router Lite, and UAP Pro. I guess that's my big picture so stealing it wouldn't really hurt anyone. What's the harm. It's only technically illegal if I get caught. And it fits my big picture.

That's nice. I still don't see it as an apples to apples comparison.

@thanksajdotcom I find your apparent lack of caring about your online perspectives incongruous in light of your proposed session at SWA2015. You might want to reconsider some of the things that are now publicly tied to your "brand".

I don't necessarily recommend people mimic how I post or all my actions. My presentation is more about utilizing professional networks to network yourself with vendors and companies. In addition, it talks about other ways to market yourself as a brand. My brand is different from someone else's. I don't claim everything I do is right or the best way. However, a lot of people from a lot of different places know my name. I will soon be published on a very major website in the IT world. While I may get criticized for some of the things I say, I've been very successful for someone my age. I've worked very hard to become so. As much as people may not believe it, I work very hard and very carefully to maintain what I've built.

Right now your "brand" is associated with unethical practices. It doesn't matter what you tell people to do if your own brand is tarnished. What happens if, after you've been published, some people go searching your name, hit this thread, and get you blackballed from the major IT rags. That isn't beyond the realm of possibility. In all honesty the more well known you become the scrupulously you have to guard your brand from hints of this stuff.

Exactly. That's why I said ever heard the phrase the bigger they are the harder they fall?

I don't disagree. The bigger they are, the harder they fall. However, I'm less afraid of falling than being something I'm not. I will not pretend anymore. I've put up with too much BS in my life trying to be things I wasn't. If I need to change, I will. But I will not put on a facade. If my opinion isn't popular, IDGAF. The jobs I want to work at may not agree with my opinion (or maybe they do), but they will appreciate that I stand behind my convictions. One reason I'm the level of salesman I am is because I don't bullshit. I sell what I believe in, and that passion carries over to the customer. I don't filter well either. To me it's a form of "hiding" who and what I am. I sincerely do appreciate you trying to help me. I hope you know that. I do work on controlling certain things about myself in both an online, in-person, and public presence. However, filters are not my strong suit.

Not to mention, but you may also be violating the TOC of your FIOS connection from Verizon since you are on a consumer plan.

Now here's something that I do know the law talkin' about.

No major ISP, from Google Fiber to AT&T to Comcast, allows "servers" on their residential connections. What constitutes a "server" is up for major debate. Needless to say, most don't care. They care more if you are slurping down bandwidth like me at an open bar.

And even if it was hosted on a residential connection, again, its breach of contract. The remedy from VZ et. al. would be to disconnect you. Not send you to the gulag.

The only "server" I have on a residential connection is a web server, which is only serving HTTP traffic, and not very much. Non-existent load from even the connection to the house's standpoint. What's technically allowed versus what your ISP actually cares about is totally different. In my opinion, if the ISP doesn't care, even if it's outside the official TOS, why should I?
