      How would you feel if every year car manufacturers re-arranged where the steering wheel was, the shifter, the pedals, and the rear view mirror, just to be "hip"? That's how I feel every time a site does a redesign.

      If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

      "To each their own" is also another way of stating that you can't be bothered to argue with someone on the internet about a relatively trivial thing so let's agree to disagree.

      That sounds nice. I'm used to no supplies, no autosave, and shit comes out of nowhere

      Atari 2600 days.

      I actually prefer games that don't autosave. I don't mind a feature that allows the player to save whenever they want. Eliminating autosave makes you think more about the consequences of your actions.

      Yes, but also results in heavy amounts of frustration in case you forget to save.

      But do you still support the purchasing of OEM only ink for normal home users considering the current paradigm?

      For basic documents, etc, it's fine. But never use 3rd party in a photo printer being used for photos, or anything high quality...

      Why do they use cheaper ink?

      The ink isn't typically up to snuff, but it also has to do with the cartridge itself. Most 3rd party cartridges are remans. They buy used up <insert brand here> cartridges and rework the chip on them and refill them with their own ink. Some ink is pretty close, other ink is not even in the parking lot of the rival's ballpark...it depends and it's completely luck of the draw figuring out which is good and which is bad...

      The cartridges you buy for inkjets have a life built-in...after they use up the ink in them, the cartridge itself is generally pretty well shot too, not just out of ink. That's how they're designed. 3rd party basically takes something used up and broken and tries to make it work again. This is why 3rd party cartridges, as a rule, have so many issues and are so unreliable. OEM works because they are always new and always use what is best for that given make and model of machine.

      The only exception to using 3rd party vs OEM is when you do things like print with edible ink, for cakes, etc. OEM doesn't make that, so 3rd party is the only way to go. That being said, most people know what they're getting into with that and are prepared for it...

      The reasons why third party are bad aren't actually relevant and I think dwelling on them is what misleads you. At the end of the day it is the cost calculation and nothing else that matters. And that calculation appears to show that third party ink is the huge winner, no real room for error as it appears to win by a landslide financially. At least with the printers and ink in the examples. Looking into why third party ink fails is getting into details that are already included in the cost calculation so while it is a point of interest, it doesn't change the actual decision which showed that third party ink was cheaper - even when it fails more than usual.

      To each their own. My inkjets have always been photo printers, so I stick to OEM.

      A lot of value to that. A lot of sites could learn from that. Change for change sake is a very foolish thing.

    • RE: IP Address: Dynamic or Static

      When it comes to dynamic vs static, you have to ask yourself why you are doing either. Static is because devices point to this as a resource and it needs to remain constant at all times. So, as you said, servers, switches, routers, etc. However, workstations are, as a rule, only accessing resources and aren't serving up content to other computers unless you have a hodgepodge environment. Therefore, these devices need an IP address to get on the network and that's it. If you have a device that needs to serve up content, add it as a reservation. Think about this: if you make all workstations static, you run the risk of missing something and causing an IP conflict, or making more work for yourself if you ever change your network scheme. What do you gain? Nothing!

    • Error When Booting Dell Poweredge 2850

      I have an issue when I boot my Dell Poweredge I got from @PSX_Defector . First off, you can see it here:
      https://www.dropbox.com/s/iomkarj26oqtn26/2015-01-06 03.53.54.mp4?dl=0

      For those who don't watch the 5 second video, this light is flashing orange and the machine is beeping, which can be heard in the video.
      tl5C4x1.jpg

      Not sure what's going on and I don't have any experience with Dell servers in this capacity, so I figured I'd reach out for help.

      I get no video from either the front or rear input, so it doesn't even appear to be posting.

      Thanks,
      A.J.

    • Beat the System with Pertino

      So Pertino has not yet released a gateway means so that you can install Pertino and use it as a gateway tunnel to access all resources behind it. It is strictly an agent. Well, if I want to access my NASes, I've had to remote into my Windows VM and access it that way. Or, I do have one public facing with the proper port forwarding. Anyways, what I did was something kinda sneaky and something I never knew I could do until today. I setup SAMBA on my new Linux server. Now I have a cron job I setup with crontab that on every reboot it mounts both my NASes into the /media folder into each of their appropriately named folders. After you have this setup, go to /etc/samba/smb.conf and add the following:

      [goflex_dallas]
      comment = GoFlex Dallas
      path = /media/goflex_dallas
      browsable = yes
      guest ok = yes
      read only = no
      create mask = 0755

      will be the share name and the rest is pretty self-explanatory. The mask is the permissions.

      Now, with that Linux server running Pertino, I can do this:
      upload-1f85f2de-82e4-4823-b96e-517008f036b2

      They open up and there are both my NASes fully open to me. I know that, in the big scale, this isn't much different that using my VM to access them, as this server is a VM as well. However, I find this cleaner and easier. I don't know of a way to share a mapped drive in Windows, which is why I love how Linux handles mapping drives so much more! It makes so much more sense, IMHO.

      Anyways, it's a handy trick I thought someone else could use.

      Thanks!
      A.J.

      According to my googlefu:

      IF>Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

      THEN>To repair the corrupted files manually, view details of the System File Checker process to find the corrupted file, and then manually replace the corrupted file with a known good copy of the file.

      So I checked the log file and there is nothing to manually fix.

      Honestly, at this point, back up any local data that needs to be backed up by slaving the drive into another PC and wipe and reload.

    • Reddit Formatting

      So let me say that I think Reddit as a concept is an awesome site. Take everything on the internet and aggregate and correlate it into one site. I think the idea behind it all is awesome. However, all my coworkers here at McAfee use Reddit religiously, and I just can't do it. Call me anal but the formatting/flow/feel of the site just gets under my skin. It feels sloppy and unorganized, and I'm always so lost on the site whenever I'm there.

      Someone tell me if I'm just crazy (about this specifically) or if you agree.

      Thanks!
