The issue I see with this is that the organization may start with good intentions, but Microsoft, or VMware, or any other vendor you want to name, will realize, if it gained traction, that they needed to ensure they were "well represented" and use the almighty dollar to "sponsor" or do whatever they had to so they could influence things. It's the same thing that happens in politics. Doing this would take a massive amount of money and organization, and without a lot of private funding with no idea how they would make money, or without accepting "donations" from major vendors, the only group I could see being able to do something like this would be a government.
Counterpoint..it was done in the Auto Industry and the big players were Ford, GM and major parts chains and not to mention major repair shops like Firestone. I believe it can be done, and should be done. It will take a bit of moderating and it can't hurt our industry, it can only help it.

RE: Fifteen Essential Open Source Tools for Windows Admins
It would be interesting to hear who is using which of these tools and why.
I use 7zip, putty (part of WinSCP), Notepad++, VirtualBox and have looked into AMANDA, but found that Zamanda was bought out by Carbonite. -

That's shocking. That's up there with not knowing what a teacher or engineer is. Although, in reality, most people only pretend to know what an engineer is and don't actually know much about the field at all and would have no idea what an industrial engineer, manufacturing systems engineer, civil engineer, ceramics engineer or other fields do.
But a sad sad reality. In the 90s ASE was pushing hard to change the public's expectation of a mechanic (think Cooter on Dukes of Hazzard) to an Automotive Technician that using high tech tools and has the latest schooling on the latest vehicles.

I don't know what IT is! I asked that very question in a new thread on here a few weeks ago, and was still none the wiser. I often tell people I'm a Computer Programmer rather than an IT Manager, as I can understand what that is. When people ask me to describe what I do as an IT Manager I can't really explain.

RE: Hiring Disparity
1990 I started school to become an Automotive Technician and was introduced to ASE. The people who started the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence wanted to have a governing body to protect both the technicians, shop owner and the customers WITHOUT government involvement. You can read more here. When I was an automotive tech, I had certs for A1-A7 ( there was no A9 at the time) which you can see here.
ASE covers Cars & Light trucks, collision repair, medium-heavy duty truck, truck equipment, school & transit buses, auto & truck parts.
I believe that since ASE encompasses a lot area in the "automotive" world, we could mimic their organisation for IT. It could help bring more structure and provide us with a voice or even a medium for generic advertising. Did you know outside of the SMB sector, that businesses or employees don't know what IT is or what an IT person is? Creating a non-profit org like ASE for IT could help change that and more, it could bring change to the hiring disparity.

Whoa...that type of bolt shearing happened while on a ladder 25 feet up 14 years ago! We had 2 extension ladders, ladder jacks and 2x12 setup to paint a billboard.

RE: Adding items to MAX RemoteManagement System Tray (Solved)
According to the MAX documentation I need to use Local File Enviromental Variable Replacements for running programs from the MAX RemoteManagement System Tray. As noted in my post above I have attempted this.
Also shudown.exe works w/o any issues, so why wouldn't SnippingTool.exe?
This is so annoying!

Nice explanation. When do you think we would be able to use phrases for password online?
Who doesn't allow this now? Pretty much any reasonable service has allowed that for a decade or more.
I have had lots of sites that wouldn't allow spaces, is a phrase without a space just as safe?

The reason 4 random words > 1 word in terms of a dictionary attack, or at best a hybrid attack, is based on the fact that 1 word, or 2 words may exist in a dictionary list, but 3 or 4 combined do not exist. A standard dictionary list reads from a list of predetermined potential passwords, everywhere from Mickey1 to Jones1, total crap. Combine the 2 words MickeyJones1 and you'd have to preform a brute-dictionary attack... which as far as I'm aware... doesn't exactly exist. Could it be written? Sure... but wouldn't that be clunky and really hog memory for no reason?
You're stuck with brute force which a 12 character pass would take quite a while.
Nice explanation. When do you think we would be able to use phrases for password online?

report back if you need more.
When you make a change in MAX RM to the System Tray policy, how long before it is reflected on the PC? I made the change and I also logged off (signed off (W8.1.1) and it still doesn't work.

Adding items to MAX RemoteManagement System Tray (Solved)
After setting up System Tray policy I added email link (with subject and recipient) as well as website link and Abort reboot which I mentioned in this post.
From the All things MAX website I was able to setup a System Tray menu option so an end user could abort a reboot using shutdown.exe in the path box and /a in the argument box. Since this worked as advertised, I thought it would be cool to add a menu item that would launch the Snipping Tool.
I have used snippingtool.exe in the path box and nothing in the arguments box. Failure (the request file could not be found error). So I tried direct path %windir%\system32\SnippingTool.exe and that has not worked either. Anyone know how what I am missing?

Once you face bad latency complete app redesign might be the answer.
I felt that way many times when talking with the developers and the client. I felt that the program had been built for Server 2003/2008 and of course it "can" work with RDS, but we don't use it like that but there should be no problems. Actually had the lead programmer say stuff like that.
Many times i lamented to the client that perhaps a web based software would be better.

@scottalanmiller said:
@technobabble not much that you can do. Lag is lag. How do you get more traffic down a road? You add lanes. It's the only real answer.
You can move to more efficient protocols like ICA and View. You can see how a VPN differs. You can use WAN acceleration. You can create complex cache mechanisms. But at the end of the day the answer is bandwidth, latency and reliability.
Thanks @scottalanmiller. I learned a lot on this subject today, which is why I joined this community!

@thanksaj you can use your phone to access lastpass and see a note that tells you what the windows password is.
Yeah, you could. But what happens on the day you forget your cellphone? What you're describing is kind of a h4x0r way of using LastPass. Not really how it was meant to be used. Or what it was meant to be used for.
Says who...it has notes for a reason. But just because you don't approve of the product being used that way doesn't mean it can't be used that way. Personal preference is just personal.
Also can anyone comment on the 4 words and how they beat a dictionary attack, thanks.
Like I said, it's certainly one way to apply the features they've built into their products, but it's not really LastPass doing something special. There are plenty of places you can store secure notes. I wasn't saying you were wrong if you did that. I'm just saying that if someone at LastPass was trying to convince you why you should use their product, you wouldn't hear that mentioned as a reason.
Why are you still arguing with me about my personal preference? I never mentioned that LastPass tried to convince me of anything. Can we move on?
