Nothing like a good power outage to start out a Monday morning

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
Doing some testing for potentially moving some Apache / PHP / MariaDB apps from CentOS 7 to Fedora 30. I keep reading good things about Fedora 30 around these parts, and since there are no specific requirements for an ancient OS, I figured it would be worth a look. They also require PHP 7, which comes OOB with Fedora 30, so I don't have to setup / rely upon 3rd party repositories. Simpler setup and more recent everything for the win!

RE: ProtonDB: Look Up Windows Game Testing on Linux from Valve's Proton
@scottalanmiller How's Fedora these days for daily desktop use? I haven't really looked at it since probably version 20, and only recently on the server side. From what I have seen though, it seems like a real nice choice.
Solus and Ubuntu were what I saw most frequently recommended for Linux gaming. I can't stand Ubuntu, so I'll likely decide between Solus and Fedora.

@scottalanmiller Yeah because having to constantly watch your back for other players adds a ridiculous amount of stress! Hah...Makes me think of my World of Warcraft days.
I don't mind that stuff, it's the online stuff... I don't have time to commit, and want to make sure that I can play the game 20 years from now kind of thing.
YES exactly, great point.
Eh and I didn't mind either, aside from the couple of times I was ganked for several hours. Though that sort of thing was and is few and far between.
Heh and they got theirs. No Man's Sky is now my to exploration and building game.
Excellent choice! I've stuck with NMS since it was released and have always found it relaxing to explore. After all of this time, I think I am still on my first galaxy and have yet to reach the center...

RE: ProtonDB: Look Up Windows Game Testing on Linux from Valve's Proton
I've been keeping an eye on Proton - it sounds like some seriously impressive work on the Linux gaming front. With how many games are listed as Platinum, or only have minor issues, it looks like Proton is making gaming on Linux a serious possibility instead of wishful thinking.
I am very happy to see this - I plan to move to something like Solus w/ Budgie as my primary OS at home instead of "upgrading" to Windows 10.

RE: What font do you use to write code?
Been using Source Code Pro for years. If that isn't available, I'll use Consolas. As for theme, my eyes can't stand dark themes, so I always go with a light theme.

Back to work another day
good grief... do we have to?..
I'd rather have a root canal than go to work..
So far, I am feeling that a root canal would be slightly more pleasant.
Came in to find last night's tape backup failed. Ran one round of diagnostics on the drive and it says "The drive is no longer recommended for use". Time for more troubleshooting, as I've seen this resolved by reseating the SCSI card and disconnecting / reattaching the cable.
Before anyone asks - yes, I have other types of backups that were successful, so all is not lost. No such thing as too many backups!

QuickBooks this morning:
Oh, you want to have a report emailed to certain users on a schedule? No problem! I just need you to turn off UAC and leave QuickBooks running, logged in to your company file and running in single user mode. What idiot at Intuit (or whoever Intuit bought QuickBooks from) thought that this was an acceptable solution? I can understand the need for things like a verify and rebuild, but for running and emailing a simple query report? Anyone with the correct permissions can manually achieve the same thing in multi-user mode...
Once again, due to Intuit's extraordinary ability to screw up basic functionality, I need to create a custom app, using their own SDK, that I can automate with the Windows task scheduler.

RE: Mouse pointer periodically freeze in place
We had a user yesterday that had a similar issue with a wired optical mouse. Mouse would occasionally move extremely slowly and right click menus would take 10 seconds or so to show up. I had them try a different mouse and the problem immediately went away.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
Installing and configuring Fedora 30 Cinnamon on an older Win 7 laptop that was heading for the scrap pile. I haven't touched Fedora in a while, but I like what I see so far. Battery life is even estimated to be better than what Windows was reporting!

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
@EddieJennings I feel your pain this morning. Our primary 11x17 printer is down for service, so we have to temporarily print to our copier for that size. First thing this morning, our shop supervisor tries to print a drawing and it comes out blank. I print the same drawing using the same app and print settings, it comes out fine. Way too early in the morning for this nonsense...

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
@scotth That was going to be my next task, but our office manager just came in and said she saw 4 spectrum trucks parked on the road not too far from us. Checking DownDetector, it looks like this is a very widespread issue.
Everyone I talk to here is quite happy with the quiet time right now though...

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
Dealing with a potential Spectrum Business phone outage - some of our lines work and some result in either a busy signal or a "The person you are trying to reach is not accepting calls at this time" message. Tried chatting with support and am currently number 70 in the queue - looks like we are not alone!

RE: Wrist or back problems? mouse, keyboard, chair?
I used to have some pretty bad wrist pain, but that is mostly gone since I switched to an Anker vertical mouse and MS ergonomic keyboard.
I still have some pain after long days of lots of coding, so I may try out a trackball to see if that helps as well.

RE: Gaming - What's everyone playing / hosting / looking to play
Must have. Since they apparently take a smaller cut than Valve does on Steam, I'm sure that the publisher, 2K, jumped at the offer.

RE: Gaming - What's everyone playing / hosting / looking to play
Yes and no - it's being released on the Epic games store exclusively in September, with the Steam release delayed for 6 months. I have the others on Steam already, so I'll just wait until then to purchase it.

RE: Gaming - What's everyone playing / hosting / looking to play
Saw the trailer for Borderlands 3 and that it will be delayed an extra 6 months before coming to Steam, so I'm going to try to play through all of the previous Borderlands games again, but with a different character. I've forgotten how much fun they are!

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
@LilAng I hate those calls as well. This time, I figured I'd try chatting with support to avoid the lengthy phone call. They told me they couldn't help and to submit a ticket on the Intuit Developer site since this was an "SDK issue" .
This should be a fun one to resolve...

Except our subscription is valid and active.
Really wish we could drop this steaming pile of garbage...

RE: HP battery recall
Just got the notice this morning as well. So far, 2 out of the 4 potentially affected laptops of ours are in the clear. Trying to get in contact with the other 2 employees, who likely won't be able to make it in to the office until next week.
