RE: Creating Scheduled Task using GPO
On a side note...Is there a way to put in these variable (%SystemRoot%) somewhere to see where they go? Like can I put cd %SystemRoot% into CMD and then PWD to see where I am?

RE: Creating Scheduled Task using GPO
Oh and BTW, I can only see the task if I run the task scheduler as an administrator and enter in my domain credentials for this for the administrator account.

RE: Creating Scheduled Task using GPO
You ROCK!!! Thanks dbeato.
Here is my AD
And my GP with the GPO linked to the Test OU with WS27 in it.
Here is the correction
But that didn't even work so I copied just what you had c:\Windows\system32\shutdown.exe. Still no love after gpupdate /force
So then a friend of mine said that I couldn't just type in NT Authority \System. I had to use the change user and search with just system. When it came up with SYSTEM, I selected this and then when I went back to the place where the user goes, it said NT Authority\System! So now it seems to be working. I think a combo of the pathway as well as the user was why I couldn't get this to work. None of the walk throughs were written for someone with such little knowledge as myself.
Thanks for the help

RE: Creating Scheduled Task using GPO
@dbeato I posted pictures above. What other settings can I show you? The task isn't showing up on the target computer so this is where I am having problems. Thank you again.

RE: Creating Scheduled Task using GPO
Thank you thecreaitvone91 and Obsolesce. Here is the output from the gpresult.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1f9AD_EvjBkXM4aVtyHYObS5qKKnni8qx/view?usp=sharingDo you have any walk through on checking the event viewer?

RE: Creating Scheduled Task using GPO
Thanks dbeato. I think you are lucky that it is working for you as it isn't working for me. I am not sure why and I think I have set it up just like you have.

RE: Creating Scheduled Task using GPO
@thecreaitvone91 Great. I created it as a computer GPO and linked it, but it isn't shutting down the computer but I also don't see it in the task scheduler. What other trouble shooting should I do? Also here is what it looks like so if you see anything missing please let me know. Thank you very much.!

RE: Creating Scheduled Task using GPO
Hey deabeto! Is that a user or a computer GPO?
-
RE: Creating Scheduled Task using GPO
@Dashrender I think I saw that post. So there may not be a place to see the task?

RE: Creating Scheduled Task using GPO
Thanks so much debeto. That help. If I want to see this in action on the target machine, where do I look? Could you also provide me a screen shot? Thanks again

Creating Scheduled Task using GPO
Hello everyone again. Veterinarian learning IT NOOB. I need to create a scheduled task via GPO and I have found several tutorials, but for several reasons, I cannot get them to work. They mostly seem to unfold like this
https://deployhappiness.com/automatic-restarts-make-for-a-smooth-day/
In this example, it shows it being created under computer
Note the instructions say Computer Configuration/...
Then it says to change the task's account to NT Authority\System
And lastly it says to change to run the task where ever the user is logged on or not.Mine shows this last line as grayed out so I cannot change it, but after I save it and re-open it now I can change it. Weird.
So still not sure if I am doing this correctly, but when I gpupdate /force and check the target machine, I don't see this task when I am logged in as a domain user and run task scheduler as administrator. Is there somewhere else I should look?

RE: Need help trouble shooting GPO.
Thanks. That looks to be a good reference and read

RE: Need help trouble shooting GPO.
OMG!!!!! It worked!!! Thank you so much Obsolesce. I cannot believe that I didn't understand that aspect of how this all works. So If I were to put a user into this test OU and apply the test GPO that has a user GPO in it then it will get applied?
-
RE: Need help trouble shooting GPO.
Thanks Obsolesce! So if I create a computer GPO and apply it to an OU with a machine in it it should work?
-
RE: Need help trouble shooting GPO.
Thanks everyone for the ideas. So here are some answers to your questions
- I have run gpupdate /force many times to get this to work on WS27 and other machines while testing to see if the GPO is applies
- gpresult /r run from an elevated prompt shows the GPO that are applied to the computer and the user. The test GPO only is applied if it is linked at the domain level not if it is linked at the test OU level.
3)Note that it is applied if at the domain level and not applied if at the test OU level (or any other level or OU)
4)This is a user GPO
5)The fact that it works and is applied to all computers at the domain level (even to the WS27 computer that is within the test OU and part of the domain) tells me that the GPO is correctly configured. When it is linked to the test OU it is not applied to WS27 that is part of the Test OU.
Thoughts?

Need help trouble shooting GPO.
Hello everyone. I am a veterinarian posing as an IT professional and I have come up against a wall that I cannot seem to overcome. I am running windows 2019 Server have a VM running my DC. I have my Active Directory set up and 2 GPO. Both are at the level of the Domain called CAH.local. If I create other GPO's and link them here, they work, but they get applied to all my computers. I created a TEST OU so that I could put one computer in it, WS27, and then apply GPO rules and link them here. I tried a simpe one of creating a folder on the desk top and when it was linked at the domain level it worked (and created it on all of my computers) but when I try to link it lower or to another OU containing just one computer, I expected that it would work and only be applied to that one computer, but it was not applied. Not sure what I am doing wrong as I can get it to work at when I link it at the domain level, but just not at OU's under the domain. Thanks for any help you can provide.

New to Windows Active Directory and Group Security Management
Hello everyone,
I am looking to get some info about windows networking, users, and how things play together. I have done some googling and was told about this forum so thought I would post here.
We have a windows 2019 server domain controller that our client computers use for user credentials. When I set up a new client computer, I create a local administrator account. I then join the computer with the domain and log in with a domain user administrator account.
If I need to make changes to the computer (say to change the UAC, change certain options, etc), I cannot use the domain administrator account and need to switch to the local user administrator account.
Is this how it is suppose to work? If not, where should I look to change settings so that the domain administrator account can make changes on the client computer?
Thanks so much.
