ProxMox is a "package" of KVM. Unlike installing KVM or Xen on your own and needing to assemble all of the parts, it's a complete ecosystem package like vSphere is to ESXi. So you get the GUI, the web interface, the API, the file systems, the backup tools, and so forth. It's an "install and use" system, not a "pick each piece and put it together yourself" system. Nothing wrong with putting your own together, but unless you are getting some extreme advantage from carefully knowing and tuning every piece that you select, better to go with something already assembled, known, and supported rather than reinventing a really well built and free wheel.

ProxMox is basically the XCP-NG of the KVM world.

You'd need to use a bare metal server. Vultr offers these, but only at $120/month currently.

Yeah, I started looking at these last night, too expensive. I remembered I have an i7 laptop. Otherwise I might have bought a 2nd hand something online.

is the client needing, thinking or looking to upgrade Office (if they use it)?

I had a client that had to move off an old on-prem exchange server (needed OS and h/w replacement), plus needed to upgrade Office.

I did the maths and it worked out it would take them 4 -5 years on Office 365 before they would reach what they had to outlay for new server h/w, licensing etc. And the other thing was, that at that 4 year point, they may be starting to look at replacing h/w and O/S again, so moving to the cloud (O365) won out.

They had an exchange db of about what you're looking at. Moving that to the cloud with the right tools was a breeze.

Just something to think about.

Another thing was to do with support. The client is based in a rural area and concern was raised as to whether adequately aware IT support staff would be available should MSX die, moving to O365 got rid of that problem.

Got this sorted out. In the end it was just a few simple changes that the 3rd party anti spam people had to put in place.

• Storage of medical data offsite
