Nope, I'm saying that policies should be in place to lock screens and users should be trained to lock their computers when walking away so nobody other than the device's assigned user can wreak havoc on the device.

That's a start. But assumes that all users can be trusted, which if we trusted them, they'd all have local admin rights.

And that pay would also mean you couldn't travel as you'd never have enough saved up for the costs in the rest of the world.

Actually you could, quite easily, and people do. For one thing, the pay in Romania is 10x (yes, ACTUALLY 10x) higher than several of its neighbours. Romania is the highest income in the region. And cost effective travel in Europe is easy, this isn't the US. Sure, visiting the US is harder, but that's about it. Getting flights and trains from Bucharest are super cheap and go to tonnes of extremely affordable places. Travel only seems expensive because of how Americans do it (mostly due to distance and not being used to travel so not knowing how to do it effectively.)

And remember that Romanians get holidays, REAL holidays. So while you earn less, you work less. Your work days are shorter and you get lots of vacation time. So taking a trip doesn't require that you stop getting paid like it often does in the US.

Well I suppose it's, as it's always been, important to lock your device if you walk away so someone can't sneak over to your chair and "wreak all kinds of havoc" on your computer if you aren't already a local admin lol.

So you are saying that all companies should keep their computers locked and only allow IT staff to use the computers and the entire idea of non-admin users should be abandoned?

All these employees just sitting at locked computers, not allowed to use them.

So where might I find the best airfare deals to this shindig? All the options I've checked are a bit pricey, but I may just have to suck it up and pay... unless anyone here has some great, hidden, cut rate plane ticket connection.

All options pretty much suck... NY is really expensive to fly in to and out of.

I know someone that just got Rochester to LA for $99 round trip.

There are no other network issues and this problem just seems to occur every so often. Sometimes its multiple times a day for a few days, then its all good for a week. I just wanted to know if there is some good solution I'm not aware of.

Reboot the server every night. Or force a restart of the file server service on it (aka server). It will release all locks. And people can still save their work if they have something open.

Kind of a good idea anyway 🙂

New York City schools won't be using Zoom anymore because of security concerns

As far as I know all security issues have been resolved.
now they were still evil for selling user data to FB - so make your choice..
I still don't like the fact that they can tap the calls. again make your own choice

So there are two ways to look at it.

The first: "All known issues are believed to have been resolved."

The second: "What caused issues like this to come up in the first place and how has the fundamental approach to security changed?"

When it comes to actual security, we are about #2, not #1. That they resolved the issues they were caught with is important, but doesn't change the actual issue. Now the later issue of leaking passwords looks to have been a mistake, accidents happen. But the bigger issue, of intentionally using their system to get info about customers and sell it and to sell it to a really evil company is so big that in reality, nothing they do short of firing all management that could have known and changing out the board would make them taken seriously from a security perspective. And AFAIK, they've not even addressed the issue.

So really... what have they done to actual fix anything? Really, nothing AFAIK.

Normal people avoid all kinds of failures every moment, of every day. Imagine if you bought a Corvette and came home and your wife is furious because you spent $150K that you didn't have, on a car you didn't need. Now explain to her how dumb she is because you ACTUALLY saved $300K by not buying the $450K Ferrari that you also didn't need. Boy will she fill dumb once she realized how much success you had in not buying that Ferrari.

The success would have been on the wife's CV saying 'Saved 100k through purchase of a Ford'. In your example they both failed

How do we know that Hyper-V was not like the Corvette? Nowhere was the business process or success mentioned, only the avoidance of the Ferrari. We have no reason to think that Hyper-V was the right, or even a good choice, only that what other option was considered was worse.

But you've highlighted my point. The "success" is skipped here. We have the Ferrari and the Corvette only in the CV example, never the Ford. So you've caught my point, but I'm not sure you've applied it to the problem at hand.

The fact that the CV writer is saying it's a success and explaining why... Is why.

There is no explanantion and no foundation for calling it a success. Hence my assumption that it is a lie.

No, its also not worth bothering any more as the controller can still see the hardware controller when booted from USB.

We could have told you that. True hardware RAID cannot be bypassed, it's physically in the path, if you cut it out, the drives have to vanish.

All Printers even LaserJet Pro is considered HP, not HPE though.

Yes, all of the issues are with HP. But He had been saying that he was going to question using HPE because of something that HP did.

@scottalanmiller : Do both companies have many of the same people on the board of directors?

    • RE: How to enter the IT world?

A bit of background that you guys are missing that I happen to know is that the OP is a senior in another field (unrelated to IT) and is currently working. So he has a specific goal of working his knowledge and experience up to a certain level before making the jump over from one to the other. He can stay in his current job until such time as his experience, knowledge and certs get him to the level that he needs in the new one. So while it may be off-putting (and I think that this is misleading because the number sounds high to those outside of his market, but those are entry level numbers more or less) it's an important part of the equation. He can't give up his current career until his IT one reaches a level where he can afford to make the jump - so gaging what he needs to do to get to that point is critical. It's not like a teenager trying to figure out the fastest path to work up to an eventually career level, it's an adult looking at how to get to a transition threshold.

There is no wrong or right in my opinion. It's an ethical dilemma, but very well worth discussing it.

I think it's easy. The self piloting car should not have let someone drive it, especially over the speed limit. If an old lady stepped into the road and could not be avoided at proper speeds, it is her fault that she is in the road. If there is a guilty party, they should be hit before an innocent one.

I think there is a debt:entitlement ratio that has never been explored.

The more debt an individual has, the more entitled they feel to a good paying job or whatever else.

I would love to see if there was actually a study on this. . .

That's a very interesting thought. I, too, would love to see that study done. And compare people with the same degrees, from the same schools, with no debt. Does the debt create entitlement even though non-debt represents the better candidate (better decision making and financial skills.)

I see this has an issue on both sides.

What's the issue on the college side? Why would it pay more or give permanent jobs to people who aren't employable? What I really want to know is why any student finds it acceptable to be taught by people useless in the real world!

The college side has the issue of not being able to say "listen, you are unemployable besides for this part time work, there is manual labor, go do that instead."

Because of the political correctness that we all have to follow.

So you feel that colleges aren't allowed to talk to professors as adults because college professors aren't up to the level of maturity needed for teenage burger flipping jobs?

Oh I don't disagree, but at the same time the idea of "I need a tenured job after 1-5 years" is crap.

No where else do you work for 1-5 years and have a life time position.

Yup, entitlement is all I see. Nobody, anywhere, gets guaranteed jobs. These are people competing with burger flippers for jobs, have no market value, yet while because they feel entitled to job security that essentially no one, anywhere ever gets.
