RE: Miscellaneous Tech News
Does this have anything to do with Tech News? Can we put a fork in it?

This is interesting.
https://fedoramagazine.org/coming-soon-fedora-on-lenovo-laptops/That's really cool.
I just hate there's the taint of their backdoor nonsense from a while ago
Did you just casual drop "backdoor" and "taint" in the same technical sentence?

HR should already have this covered by firing the users that is not following policies.
Amen. That was my first question. "I have not received a disable account request, why not?"

RE: Apple plans to scan your images for child porn
@carnival-boy said in Apple plans to scan your images for child porn:
Scanned, but the info is private. Apple explicitly don't have access to the data until it is uploaded to iCloud.
It is no accident that totalitarian systems in which there is no freedom whatsoever also tolerate no privacy.
Recent history, in my lifetime, privacy has eroded. I dont care what side of the isle you are on, if someone says your information is private, they are lying to you. It doesnt matter who is leading the ship, if you dont protect your privacy like you protect your own life.
It is a slippery slope to "Find me the person and I will find a crime that suits your needs".
They are all lying, until such time as their actions prove otherwise.

Traffic shaping issues.
Can I get some advice on traffic shaping for office 365. It appears that when I run check for updates in MS word it appears to get caught up in our traffic shaping net. I have tried the canned meraki office365 bypass filter, adding the ip address of the server, adding the /24 of the vlan. I have spent several hours reading and trying to find a way to sniff out what is happening to no avail, just more confusion.
Thank you,

do what I did and turn off all traffic shaping on your Meraki
Or go a step better and just replace the Meraki with Unifi! Save money and fix the problem, all in one go.
Soon as the boss retires, that is absolutely in the plan.

Computer Glasses: recommendations
Either my arms are getting shorter or I am getting older. I currently have 20/20 but am starting to feel eye strain. Any tips or suggestions on protective wear?

(Hypothetical)
Let's say you are the sole bread winner, have a wife + children and get laid off. You learn of a job opportunity that you can take but in order to get said job you must lie somewhat about your qualifications. Let's say for the sake of the argument that it's 100% certain that you must lie in order to get the position. Essentially your options are lying to provide for your family or having character and being an honest person, but your family may go somewhat without.
I've been thinking about this stuff a lot lately. What is more right? My inclination would be honesty, but is it really right when I would be deciding on behalf of other people whom I am responsible for?
Honesty should always lead your actions or decisions. Lying for me (I hope) would be the last option before my children go hungry.

Also, your 17 year old will probably change his mind next week. And then again the week after that. And again this afternoon.
This is a bunch of shit.
No it isnt. I added a conditional probably at the beginning. The vast majority of people at 17 are clueless about what they want for their future, except for some nebulous 'to get a job' type goal that their parents have foisted on them.
Just because you swear and berate people on a forum doesnt make you correct. So who is the pot and who is the kettle?

@gjacobse It makes cartoon noises and a light on the side flashes. I use it when I have to assist our frequent flyers. It puts me in the right frame of mind.

RE: Non-IT News Thread
Their are black hats and white hats, their are good guys and bad guys, there are venomous snakes and harmless snakes, their are good public servants and bad public servants. Don't be so bitter and angry, its not good for you. It sounds like racism of a profession. I have family in law enforcement. The broad brush doesn't help anyone.

RE: SAMIT: Why IT Does Not Customize (Their Environments)
I watched, its great advice. It is something I have always instinctively known but have never really been able to articulate. When SHTF, all the fancy trinkets and add-ons go bye-bye. Thanks Scott!!
