    • If starting from scratch, would you suggest learning BASH or Ansible?

      Hi there,

While I'm preparing for RedHat certification, I was thinking to learn BASH, for general use and also exam has requirement to write simple bash scripts.

But, in long run and to be more efficient, I feel deep learning of Ansible is better than BASH? If I left BASH, and go with Ansible do I lose anything? I assume Ansible covers what BASH can do?

      Appreciate your suggestions.

    • Staying in Ethics and Legal with ChatGPT usage?

      Hi there,

I would like to know more on ethical and legal things while using ChatGPT.

      For example:

Let’s say I’m using ChatGPT to write some content for Website, from where ChatGPT is getting this information? is that like Google (which pulls info from all Internet sites)? Is it legal to put this ChatGPT content on my website or sell to client?

No secret that, on any Freelance platform, sellers are using ChatGPT to generate web content, articles, guides for their clients and generating money. 🤑

For Images, I didn’t try how to generate images with ChatGPT, I assume it is fine or legal, as AI may generate itself the unique/non-copy right image by itself?

Using ChatGPT via Web View in Android/iOS Mobile App? is ChatGPT ok with this or not allowed?

Is paid version makes any differences in legal or ethical thing compared to Free version?

      Appreciate any responses!

    • Offsite backup and CentOS Upstream - looking for suggestions.

      Hi there,

I have couple things to ask:

Offsite backup: Whether onsite backup and replication to DR site together is covering the Offsite backup purpose?

Scenario is, solid backups and replication to DR site is in place with enough retention by considering RPO and RTO, but there is no Offsite Backup Plan in place.

I believe any of items like Backup and Replication to DR site is not replacing Offsite Backup, especially with rise of Ransomware these days.

For example, if ransomware infection happens on production server and on backups, and the replication of infected data goes to DR Site, hence, all data is gone.

Please clarify how necessary offsite backup is and provide some scenarios, in which offsite backup (tape to site or cloud) is the only solution or last resort.

CentOS Upstream: Isn't okay for Production Servers anymore?

I'm not very clear with what's going on with CentOS after it is announced as Upstream.

I came across the situation, in one big environment CentOS is in use, setup is in process, so I wanted to put some light on it and let our team think for long run, with regards to use or not to use CentOS?

Is it not good for Production Servers anymore like before? Can someone explain me in layman terms please?

      Thank you!

      Hi,

      https://theopenem.com/

Just found one more Endpoint Manager. Might be easier with hosting on some VPS for assets on different locations.

      Cool, issue resolved.

      https://www.techotopia.com/index.php/Dual_Booting_RHEL_with_Windows

Adding below thing to /etc/grub.d/40_custom was enough, all went good.

      menuentry "Windows 10" {
      set root=(hd0,1)
      chainloader +1

    • Windows 10 and RHEL 8 Dual Boot help.

      Hi there,

Is someone out there to help on dual boot issues?

I had Windows 10 Pro installed on ThinkPad and then, I create some space and make it unallocated space for Linux. I loaded RHEL 8 on USB with Rufus and installed RHEL 8 on free space, all went well.

Once I restart the laptop, I don't see any option to choose Windows or Linux to load, it is straightly going to Linux.

I set up multiple times with Ubuntu and CentOS, never had issues.

Now, I'm not sure about BIOS / UEFI thing, if which way Windows was installed and Linux. What can I do in this case? fresh setup Windows 10 and setup Linux, by taking care or noting down about BIOS/ UEFI thing.

@openit said in What do you use to manage multiple Linux servers?:

To manage CentOS, Ubuntu and Redhat linux servers, what do you use?
Do you recommend something like https://cockpit-project.org/ ?

Cockpit is for managing one machine. It's a nice tool but.... doesn't address real management.

I wonder what do you mean by "for managing one machine"? I setup Cockpit, added multiple servers and I can manage all these servers individually from Cockpit.

If you are talking about "can't trigger a task on all servers connected on Cockpit", maybe yes, so far I can select one Server and manage it, but no action option for all Servers at a time.

    • Resources for mastering Linux and getting RHCSA certification.

      Hi there,

I have total of 8 years of IT Experience as IT Generalist mostly. Current position is in Windows environment.

I'm familiar with open source tools, and have little work experience on Linux (CentOS and Ubuntu).

Trying to stream line the career into following areas:

      1. Full time Linux Administrator
      2. DevOps
      3. System Administrator (Windows and Linux)

In this process, I want to learn Linux deeply and get RHCSA certification.

Thinking to get a course in Udemy (because it's cheap), and of course spinning RHEL 8 on VMs under Developer Plan etc. Any cheap or free book (soft) will be great, I will get it printed and study.

Any relevant suggestions are welcome, either with regards to Linux or Career.

    • Putting hands on RHEL, to be familiar, get certification and to apply for any Linux roles around.

      Hi there,

I got little hands-on experience on CentOS and Ubuntu, but what I realized is RedHat is the market around me and people expecting RHEL line certification when it comes to full-time Linux or partial Linux job roles.

I know CentOS is the same as RHEL, but thinking to use free servers (16) from RHEL under Developer Plan, run some servers in-house, get familiar with RHEL (if not functionality, let it be an interface, license registration, and any other new things).

So in this process, I am planning to setup Snipe-IT here. Well, the commands must be the same, just name of OS and I can say I'm managing RedHat Linux in my profile 😉

      https://computingforgeeks.com/install-snipe-it-asset-management-on-centos-8-linux/

      Any advice in general?

@gotwf FreeBSD reminded me about OpenBSD. For what purpose or services you were using FreeBSD?

Not sure what it makes not to use OpenBSD or FreeBSD as CentOS and Ubuntu, even though they are known for solid.

Is that because continuous improvements in features, security and support?

I'm not familiar with Manage Engine Data Security Plus, so no idea how it compares to that.

Manage Engine Data Security Plus = File server auditing - monitor, alert, and report on all file accesses and modifications made to your file server environment.

I really need this kind, to monitor our Windows File server shares, once in a while, people come to ask me who deleted or modified these etc.

@IRJ Is Wazuh can do something like this? once I install an Agent on Windows File Server?

In a deployment that we did, we ran into some serious limitations with Wazuh where it couldn't be used for multiple sites. Not a limitation that I investigated, but @irj did and couldn't find a workaround.

Other apps like it, like Graylog and Zabbix, we were able to work around those limitations and can use them for multiple sites / companies.

My scenario is for a single site, so no issues on this for me.

    • Is someone using Wazuh? Is alternative for Graylog, ME Data Security etc.?

      Hi,

I was willing to set up Graylog 2 for longer, it was not so easy for me to get it to work. I always try to spin new open-source tools in free time, even if I don't use them in production.

Recently I came across Wazuh software https://wazuh.com , I'm surprised by multiple features, few of them I can't digest, and few of what I"m aware is Integrity Monitor, is it alternative for Manage Engine's Data Security Plus? and alternative for Graylog 2?

After enough research I thought there is no solid open source SIEM, but Wazuh seems close to good?

Is it possible to pull info every port of switch, just like Spiceworks Networ Monitor used to do? If yes, what template I would need to use or any config? Most switches we have are Cisco SG300.
