In cases like this it's challenging, because it's not just a thing in your presence, it's something you're using that 100% depends on someone else to manage/maintain it.

Only challenging in that you have no physical recourse, you are left only with the court system. It's clear cut that you bought and paid for a service and they chose not to deliver the paid for service after they took off with the money.

It's it hosted in Canada? which makes it just that much harder to sue over.

I have a truck, a baseball bat, spray paint etc and I'm willing to drive long distances to... express frustration... for a fee 🙂

Could have a bidding war for those services. They are practically in my backyard 😉

Yes, it's Fibernetics, a Canadian ISP. Another reason to be wary of doing business in Canada.

You know...it's not like you're doing business with a company in North Korea. Lmao. You'd find that in many cases, the laws here don't differ greatly than the US. Except that a US address does make seeking legal action a bigger p.i.t.a.

I do smell a class-action lawsuit coming for this change in their ToS. Will be interesting to watch. I also got caught up in the one-time cost but hadn't used it in forever, simply because it's completely unusable, and just chalk it up to a good lesson.

      Hi guys,

I noticed on Azure you can get an addiontal 40% discount (seems new) if you use your own server licensing.

Do you have a link for where you saw this? I've never seen that and I use Azure for a bunch of internal stuff.

    • RE: The First Rule of VoIP

@scottalanmiller Out of curiosity, how can call quality be guaranteed at all? Once your call reaches the open internet, there isn't anything the ISP can do to control anything downstream. That's always been something I could never wrap my head around as I always see this as an impossibility (for any calls that go over the public internet anyway).

    • RE: Project: Home/SMB NAS Setup -- Need ur advice

If you plan on running the Plex app from the NAS, you're not going to be happy if you have need for any transcoding unless you're running one with one of the Xeon chips. Anything else and it'll be much too anemic to transcode. You'll get nothing but stutter and disappointment. If you have a separate Plex server and all you want to do is serve-up the files from the NAS, you'll do fine.

I have a client like that. The owners own two different companies. Both domains were added to the portal. The owners have email addresses for both domains, but one mailbox. Some employees have both, some just have one depending on what they do.

How does billing work? All on one or are they somehow split?

Billing is to the primary domain.

I have clients similar to this where they created 2 separate email accounts, one for each domain and billing is split by their accounting department (based on cost of the subscription for each email account).

I have another client who also has multiple domains registered however chose to retain 1 single email account with aliases created for their other domains. This allowed them to receive all emails in a single email and respond according to whichever domain they wished.

Unless the UPS is sized to handle the printer along with everything else, that can kill your UPS. And 750VA is much too small to connect even the smallest of desktop laser printers to.

    • RE: IT is the Opposite of Doctors

@scottalanmiller said in IT is the Opposite of Doctors:

I use doctors as the example of why we don't use university education in IT all of the time.... because doctors are the opposite of IT in every way. Literally, the polar opposite.

With doctors, our goal is not success, but the avoidance of failure. We care primarily that the doctor not kill the patient, this is MORE important than curing a rare disease. We don't care about the overall chance of survival, only that the doctor not be blamed for the death. If a doctor has an 80% chance of saving someone's life, but a 50% chance of killing them trying to do it... the doctor is trained to let you die because it's a huge risk to have the doctor be blamed for your death. Doctors are all about "avoiding a lawsuit" and "not being at fault" rather than "achieving the best results." So we have systems that focus on heavy memorization of repetitive things, pre-defined procedures to be followed, pricing based on procedure rather than effort, promotion based off of politics rather than results and loads of certifications to deflect legal risks. In fact, doctors are essentially in a union that makes there be little to no value in being the best. The real value is just... showing up.

I have to say that I value MOST of the stuff you post Scott but sometimes, the shit that comes out is truly entertaining. Your whole speech about Drs is one such piece. Thanks for the good laugh.

Btw, I think you may want to look for a new Dr if this accurately described yours.

    • RE: Colocation America- Ask Me Anything
      1. What are the right questions a first-time colocation seeker should be asking?
      2. How should colocation facilities be compared against one another? Pricing is obviously important but when services differ between offerings, what can be used to provide a valuable, effective comparison.
      3. What are the most common "gotchas" that need to be considered in colocation?
      4. Are there things that come up with tenants that surprise you on a regular basis? Perhaps things they should have known?
      5. What's the dumbest thing you've seen from a tenant?

I also have Crashplan to reseed. So I should make sure I get it all in this month.

I'd love to keep using Crashplan but their upload speeds are abysmal!

What are you doing that uploads speeds from the CrashPlan side are a constraint?

Backing up photos, music and home movies. About 4TB. Best up speed I can get is around 10Mbps.

4TB total, but what kind of change rate? I never have any problem with a 10MB uplink.

      Initial seed.

      That's going to take forever.

I was going to include my full movie collection but that would have brought it up to 28TB. At 10Mbps it estimated a little over a year for that seed. Lol
