RAID 5 is still a solid choice. At sixtreen drives, though, I might start wanting to consider RAID 6. That's a lot of drives.

Certainly seems odd to not KNOW the answer to this question before you make a purchase.

Not odd really. I knew I wouldn't be running RAID10 so the only remaining question was whether it would be RAID5 or RAID6. The 512GB difference in storage between the two wasn't going to change the fact that I would be setting up 16 drives out of the 24 available slots.

I'm thinking negligible since the workload isn't going to be very IO intensive.

What kind of writes do you do, and what percentage of the time?

About a third of the files will be WORM like video content. A few websites (15). There will be 5 instances of Nextcloud for clients to test out. Unifi instance. Piwik, Mattermost, Veam B&R, Snipe-IT, Guacamole, Alfresco x 2, Fastvue, Kimai, without having actual data and only ballparking it, I'm likely 80% read. The videos are the most write intensive and even though they are large files, only get uploaded at a rate of 3 - 10 per week.

See that's exactly why I asked, I was thinking that might be on the edge of too many. How much of a penalty for RAID6 should I expect on performance with SSDs? I'm thinking negligible since the workload isn't going to be very IO intensive.

    • RAID5 Still The Go-To Setup For SSD?

Picked up a Dell R720xd for the lab today. Popped-in 16 SSD drives and will be completing setup tomorrow. RAID5 still the go-to for drive setup these days for SSDs? I'd prefer RAID10 but I need the additional drive space from RAID5.

Any of these options recommended for a multi-client scenario? Would need authentication so each client only accesses their own documentation.

Yes drupal can do that. Wiki.js can have roles and users that have access to specific areas but I've noticed if you search for something, the search show up in the bar from areas they don't have access to. They can't get there, but the titles and such show up.

Search is so often a week point in security, argh. If all you are doing is hiding passwords or details, it often works fine. If you are hiding concepts, it's useless.

Ya I was really disappointed when I saw that. So you need multiple sites for separation, which sucks.

Is it still an issue if Wiki.js is not setup for public access?

Yes because you don't want clients seeing info for other clients. And we were going to use it for a user area and an internal documentation site. But that won't work now.

I suppose I could try the multi-tenant feature in Alfresco. Not exactly what I wanted but might work.

@mike-davis said in running Webroot + Malwarebytes?:

I won't allow the free trial to be installed on client computers, so the paid version would be the only option. I was wondering more if having two products actively trying to scan files would end in contention issues. A manual scan kind of defeats the purpose in my mind.

I run both AV and Malwarebytes on lab equipment and some of my clients and never had a conflict.

Yeah, can't have search results show up for another client, even if inaccessible. Thanks for this tidbit of info on wiki.js.

Yep. I have on a Dell R230 and R620. It correctly identified that the R230 was fully updated and as patched as possible, and that the R620 was still waiting for the microcode and bios update from Dell. Nice and easy for validation once you've applied your patches and updates.

Aren't latency and jitter the most likely concerns with remote users? Assuming they have the standard minimum speed available?

Yes, those are the real concerns but it is not within the users or @EddieJennings control to fix these issues. These are for the ISP to address.

Exactly, which I think should be part of establishing realistic expectations along with communicating minimum requirements for speed. Would hate to have remote users expect to have VoIP available but it turns out to be unusable.

He wants battery because no running cables, because of stupid lease rules they aparently signed.

BAsically I doubt if they could even put up a battery powered camera. because the holes drilled to mount it would be damage too.

Right, missed that. That seems like a strange rule otherwise the lessee would have to agree to only use whatever structures exist or power setup is in place.

@guyinpv could you be misreading those lease rules? Not sure how any business would operate under those types of agreements.
