@black3dynamite said in GPP - Deploying Printers To AD Group:

Can't someone just connect directly to the printer and bypass your lockdown share printer?

If that was a concern, you would VLAN the printers so only the print server had access to the VLAN.

Your page file can be set at a fixed size, so you could leave that on the OS disk.

It still applies. If something goes crazy and you get a flood of email, the mailbox database can grow and fill the drive, but your OS disk won't be full, so you can still work on your server.

    • RE: Has ConnectWise Set ScreenConnect Adrift as Ghost Ship Software?

The start of the post sounded like you were suggesting the ConnectWise bought ScreenConnect and was abandoning it. Could it be that they are moving towards the same subscription based model that most vendors are going to? Could it be that they are not focusing on supporting self hosted options since it generates so little revenue for them?

Numbers and marketing aside, are there products out there that have had major changes after 6 major releases? I think 90% of the functions people use in Microsoft Word were in version 6.

For the guys trying to host their own screen connect server, why? We try to steer our customers to products in the cloud, why not use them ourselves? I've used Screen Connect that a private company hosted themselves and then started a screen connect subscription. The first thing I noticed is that I got the updates faster from the screenconnect hosted option.

I don't think it's fair to call ScreenConnect ghost ship when other products are really releasing new features faster. I forgot who said that once a product gets to about version 6 it's pretty mature in what it does and you shouldn't expect ground breaking new features in subsequent versions.

If GoToAssist/LogMeIn/Bomgar had come out with a bunch of features in the last year that ScreenConnect didn't, I would probably feel differently, and I would vote with my dollars at renewal time.

That's odd. Are you in the process of upgrading from 5.5 since it's coming end of life? Maybe a current HP custom .iso will fix the issue.

Just out of curiosity, is this a white box that you put together, or an off the shelf system? I'm assuming onboard NIC? Do you have another NIC (USB or otherwise) that you can use for testing purposes?

I'm thinking NIC firmware/driver issue as well. Could be chipset drivers as well.

    • RE: The VAR Kickback System and How You Can Make a Good Living from Vendors

I've worked on both as corporate IT and MSP owner. There is a place for corporate IT and a place for an MSP.

The MSP was the clear winner in small companies. Someone trying to do dual roles such as IT and accounting was generally weak in one or the other because they weren't spending enough time on one or the other to become really good at it.

On the corporate side, even if they hired lots of stuff out, they still needed an IT Manager to manage all the IT projects. They knew what was a priority for their business and managed projects accordingly.

    • RE: security cameras using coax?

@JaredBusch I had no idea those adapters existed. I'll have to keep that in mind if I run in to a run where I can't pull the coax out while pulling a piece of Cat 6 behind it. Thanks for the link.

In this project most of the runs aren't too bad and they want to move the NVR anyways. If it's all IP based, that's no problem - the NVR only needs one network drop.

@psx_defector said in security cameras using coax?:

Coax cable means lots of things. What kind of cable? How high quality is the cable?

You could covert it over to ethernet, depending on the quality/length. But most coax should be sufficient for enough high res video, just depends on the camera.

I'll have to check the cable. In this case I know it has been installed 9 years. Is there a type of coax that can handle more than 2.1 MP?

      Isnt 2.1 MP a 1920x1080 image?
      What is wrong with that?

From what I understand, 2.1MP is as high as you can go over coax, and in some cases it's not high enough to see the level of detail that you need.

Check event viewer. I would probably go in to the printer manager and delete the drivers for that printer and reinstall them.

Is printer set up as a shared printer off a print server, or is it being pushed out as a local printer with a TCP/IP print queue?

If you rolled them with a static address instead of DHCP with a reservation, there is a possibility of a duplicate IP address on the network. That will cause symptoms like you are having.

@dustinb3403 And that is their complaint about the old system - you can't see to the level of detail that they need. Just like in your example.

I think I'm going to try to line up a side by side of a Ubiquiti and one of the 2.1 Mp cameras that runs over coax. Hopefully the Ubiquiti will make it clear it's better to go IP.

    • security cameras using coax?

One of my clients received a quote for a security camera system. I noticed they wanted to reuse the coax that is in place and replace the cameras and NVR. For this type of system, are 2.1 Megapixel cameras that run over coax current tech, or should a totally IP system be the only thing considered? I'm starting to consider getting in to camera systems because it looks like many of our clients use them and I have not been impressed with what I have seen installed lately.
