      It's originally from Paul and is famously cited by John Smith as a foundation for the failed Jamestown Colony.

      That's interesting. The same thing happened to the Plymouth colony at about the same time. It's almost like experiments in communism don't end well.

      The original, infamous source of America's unique "fairness ethic" comes from the Jamestown colony. It was the "you work, you eat" thing. Which made sense with 50 people trying not to starve collectively.

      Today, it makes no sense. But it has been drilled into us through systematic education programs. To a degree that Americans have no idea that no other country in the world thinks of "fair" with the priority that we do. It's uniquely American.

      I think you're thinking of the Plymouth colony where they worked "collectively" for two years and collectively starved. Then a change in policy gave each family a plot of land to work for themselves. That year they had an abundance.

      I'm not sure I follow you though. Are you saying that it's unfair to work for your food? Should some able bodied people be able to eat for no effort on their part?

      My Dad, with only a high school education, started cleaning businesses and eventually turned it into a business where he made over $100,000 a year during the 1980s

      The book "The Millionaire Next Door" says this is primarily the way 1st generation millionaires are made. Their children often earn six figures, but are effectively broke. The book explains that the blue collar parents want to provide for their kids things that they didn't have, such as an education. The problem is the kids don't learn to live within their means, and because they are making lots of money, spend even more money...

      The W60P is $128 vs the W52P for $108.
      What is it that makes you want to pay $20 more per phone?
      edit: That is the cost of a single handset with a base station

      Mostly I'd like to play with it. I'm willing to pay the extra $20 for that.

      BTW, where are you getting those prices? Amazon prime is ~ $170 others are around $140 before shipping.

    • cordless VoIP

      I'm looking for a cordless VoIP solution. It's for a dispatcher that gets a low volume of calls and doesn't want to be tied to the desk. The office has solid wifi, but I think the DECT would work well. It doesn't need to have long talk time, but it should be easy to answer the call and transfer the call. If someone knows of something with a dedicated transfer button, that would be better than fumbling through menus while the caller is sitting there in awkward silence.

      I found the Grandstream dp750 + 720 and the Yealink W60P. Does anyone have any experience with either of these or something similar?

    • RE: Ethernet link going down and then up after 3 seconds.

      Like @matteo-nunziati says, see if STP is turned on on your ProCurve. If it detects a MAC on two interfaces, it will shut one down. Then it doesn't see it, so it turns it back on. I had issues at one time with a Wireless controller (Nortel) that had proxy arp on that would cause a segment of the network (the switch the wireless AP was on) to get shutdown when a laptop would boot up.

      Outside of port 25, the only other time I have to do anything with outbound traffic is when I have load balancing across two ISPs enabled. Applications like voice and some secure sites that don't like the source address bouncing around require that.

      @jaredbusch said in URL filtering on EdgeRouter:

      Well the correct way is not to try to shoehorn this into your edge router but if the site is small enough yes you can add the packages and do it this way

      This would be for 4 computers and a server. Since the users won't be able to get on the internet and it's only windows updates and AV updates that will generate traffic, I think they will be OK.

      Have you used this in a typical office environment? Where would you draw the line in terms of number of users/number of rules? I've never used the ER to filter on domains before.

    • URL filtering on EdgeRouter

      I have a network where I only want the computers to be able to get out to Windows updates and their AV software. Both of those things work on URLs and not IPs. Is the correct way to go about this command line on the ER with some commands like:

      url-filtering {
           squidguard {
               redirect-url http://google.com
                rule 10 {
                   local-allow windowsupdate.microsoft.com
                   local-allow *.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
                   local-allow *.update.microsoft.com
                   local-allow *.windowsupdate.com
                   local-allow download.windowsupdate.com
                   local-allow download.microsoft.com
                   local-allow *.download.windowsupdate.com
                   local-allow test.stats.update.microsoft.com
                   local-allow ntservicepack.microsoft.com
                   source-group LAN-desktops
               }
       source-group LAN-desktops {
                   address 192.168.10.2-192.168.10.254
               }

      Is there a better way to go about this?

      Usually if it's heat related, you can get it to boot and work until it warms up, and then it fails. As @Pete-S said, blowing compressed air over it continuously would solve the heat issue if there is one.

    • cloud ftp back up target

      I have a couple of cloud based systems that need a ftp back up target. One in Azure and one on Vultr if it matters. I'm looking for the most cost effective place to set up a ftp backup target. Along those lines, is there a pre built appliance for that, or is there one Linux distribution better than another for setting that up?
