The other thing about the Finnish system is the taxes it takes to pay for that. The two things that I think Americans would have a hard time with is the 100% automobile tax and the tax brackets that increase exponentially. So cars cost twice as much. You can't earn more to pay for it since it gets to the point where if you work more hours, you get taxes so much higher you end up with less in your pocket.

I'm the opposite, the gov't should put everyone through college. It's the picking and choosing that is the problem.
This is something that is often overlooked. People often site Finland as having free college - and they do - but they don't tell the whole story. Finland's department of education realized that if any more than 69% of the population goes to college, they won't have enough blue collar workers, so they have national entrance exams. If you don't do well there, you don't go to college.

I'm not sure that's even a good litmus test... because when you get out school, if jobs were there when you started, there's no guarantee they will still be there when you get out. Not to mention that most job listings are fake as has been mentioned on several threads around here lately.
That's true, but some of the degrees are a bad idea at the time and will continue to be. Is basket weaving an industry that's set to explode?

RE: Student Loan Forgiveness Rant
The student loan process is really screwed up. Only the government would give out loans like that. A private company would have a loan officer that would look at everything you have going for you and have you sign a document that gives them continuous access to your grades with the right to call your loan whenever they wanted.
Of course a private company wouldn't even do that with out the bankruptcy protection that the government enjoys. Think about it, it's the only loan that can't be wiped out by bankruptcy court.
The problem with these easy to get govt loans, is that it provides no incentive for colleges to come up with a value proposition. A private company would ask what you want to study, take a quick look and determine there are no jobs in that field that could possibly pay the loan back and deny your loan.

RE: VoIP over Wifi
I have one client with Verizon rebranded Yealink T46G running over wifi with no issues. It's a small shop with a couple of Ubiquiti AC lite APs so it's totally possible given the right conditions.
I think as a manufacturer wifi has so many issues, you probably would be hesitant to get in that game. To then add DECT on the top of wifi would just add another transport subject to external interference to troubleshoot.

The only downside is that it isn't too mobile and costs a little bit of money
yeah, that would be ugly hanging off the side of the tablet. Also $1,500 seems a bit steep for something that Windows 10 is supposed to have built in. Thanks for the eval though.

RE: wireless screen mirror
@penguinwrangler hmmm, I guess I'll have to go the "buy it and try it" route. I was hoping someone had found something that worked well.
-
RE: wireless screen mirror
@penguinwrangler I use the ChromeCast at home and it works great for NetFlix. I this case it's for an office and they want to cast everything (Excel, Chrome, etc) from the tablet that might get passed around to a 42" monitor at the end of the table. A wire isn't desirable since they will be passing it back and fourth.

RE: wireless screen mirror
I checked the TV settings and the TV is on the same wifi network and I can ping it from the laptop. Allshare is set to allowed.
I don't really care about my home set up. I'm more concerned with finding something that works for my client. They have to order a 42" monitor for this, so if someone can recommend one that they know will work, that would be helpful.

RE: wireless screen mirror
I know it should work in Windows 10, but I just tried with my Windows 10 Pro laptop to my Samsung SmartTV at home and it doesn't work. The laptop doesn't find the TV. When I select "Connect to a wireless device" it errors with Didn't detect another display.
When I go to "Bluetooth and other devices" it's listed under other devices. When I click on it, my only option is to "remove device".

wireless screen mirror
Can anyone recommend a device to mirror a screen from a Windows 10 tablet to a TV/monitor? Is the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter any better than the miracast devices? This would be the same tablet every time and needs to be able to be set up once and then it just works when the tablet is on without having to put in pin each time, etc.

RE: AIM Shutting down
I know a guy that is still using the AOL desktop software and has AIM running. When he logged in and I heard all the doors opening up as his contacts loaded, it brought back some memories. Isn't it amazing how one day we can't live without an app and then all the sudden it's a distant memory?

RE: Calculating Network Backbone Bandwidth Requirements
Last week I was onsite and uncovered a 100 Mb switch. The bonus was the 20 year old print controller hooked to it.

RE: Calculating Network Backbone Bandwidth Requirements
As a MSP, when you walk in and see unmanaged switches under desks, you kind of know what needs to happen.

RE: Best practices for helpdesk portal options for end user
Try thinking about it from their side in terms of things they would know. ie. no one can use the internet. no one can print. one person can not print.

RE: Helpdesk SLAs
Consider "network issues" under normal. Who determines what's a network issue? Does it matter if it's for one person or the entire LAN? If no on can use the internet because your DNS server is down, is that a network issue, or a internet issue? DNS sounds technical, so does that mean it's a High priority?
Do you see where I'm going with this?
The purpose of the SLA is to set the expectation for the end user. When you define things in terms you understand, the end user might still be confused.
-
RE: Helpdesk SLAs
for High, you might want to add that it's affecting multiple people and time sensitive work.
-
RE: Helpdesk SLAs
Might also want to think about how you deal with an internet outage. Although it's critical, it's also out of your hands sometimes. You can't promise a 6 hour resolution if your ISP can't meet that.

RE: Zabbix - email alerts
@cronsloth Your helo could be zabbix.mydomain.tv but otherwise, that's how your config should look. I built a newer zabbix server than the one where I had the issues above. To get the newer one to work, the only thing I had to do was edit my SPF record in DNS ( it's a txt record) to add my Zabbix server as an authorized sender for my domain.

RE: Zabbix - email alerts
@cronsloth Do you mean the config page under Administration -> Media Types -> email?
