Can you see (line of sight) any buildings from your house that have high speed? If you're slightly technical, you could set up a Ubiquiti wireless bridge for $200-$300...

@scottalanmiller @Danielle-Ralston Isn't that about 10 minutes from your old stomping grounds?

I went back though my notes and I think this is the same thing Tim said, but don't have the time to check. Here are my screen shots:

OK - you see this points at NAS, you are maxing out it's capability speed wise. If you want more speed, you must replace that. BUT, be aware, there is a domino effect likely here. You see this points at 8 port switch this is likely to be the next cause of issue because reasons. So simply replacing the NAS likely won't solve your issues, you'll also likely need to replace this switch.
yep, you get it. They need to hear it a few times.

running Webroot + Malwarebytes?
I have a managed customer that said their web guy recommends running Malwarebytes along with AV software "because it's looking for different stuff." Is anyone running Webroot and Malwarebytes together. Years ago I remember some people running two AV products "in case the first one missed something" and their machines had issues with lockups etc.

@mike-davis Might be time to replace the 8 port NetGear Gig switch
I've told them that about 3 times. Each time they turn it down. When I came in they had a 10/100 switch as their core and Server 2003 acting as their firewall. I told them they would have to replace a bunch of stuff just to get up to today's standards. They hemmed and hawed about the price, but I told them to look on the bright side, they haven't spent any money on IT in 20 years...

@mike-davis Did you test speeds directly from the Unifi switch?
Good call. While I was onsite, I left when they didn't have creds to the Synology, but when you said that I realized I have access to the server and that had a drive mapped with cached creds, so I repeated the test from the Synology to the server which are both directly connected to the Unifi switch. The transfer varied from a max of about 70MB/s to a low of about 5MB/s. Average was in the 40MB/s range.
Write speed of the server might be an issue. I just drilled in to it and it's running two WDC WD1003FBYZ drives in a software mirror, so it seems like it should be capable of better. OF course they set up Server 2012 R2 physical, so who knows what else is messed up.

RE: Synology DiskStation DS713+ transfer speeds
RAID 0 or RAID 1? Is all the cabling good? Gigabyte Ethernet I assume?
I have to have the vendor give me access to the Synology.
They had 4 CAD machines and some mills connected to a 8 port NetGear Gig switch before going back to the Unifi switch I put in months ago. I wanted to test the line, but they didn't want to knock everyone off and kill the jobs they had running. I told them to let me know when I can get a maintenance window.

Synology DiskStation DS713+ transfer speeds
I was at a client site where they were complaining about speed on the CAD stations. I asked them to show me what was slow, and it came down to file open and save operations. I checked in to that and found out they are saving to a rebranded Synology DS713+. The transfer speeds I was getting was 15MB/s. I looked it up the specs and it says it can do 202 MB/s read. It's only a two drive unit. Is it possible they mean it can do that with an expansion unit, but not with a single spinner?

RE: UNMS vs Unifi for a deployment "today"
I think the decision is easier when you consider the alternatives. I'm rolling the Edge Routers because even if I have to manage them manually, I'd rather do that than pay for Meraki and that model year after year.

That is true. And for a bonus round I get to explain to the client why what the copier guy did is wrong...

Why not statically assign it an IP that is outside of the scope...
In the case of the copier, I would have to visit every desktop to change the IP in the port of the local printer the copier guy set up. I'm lazy.

unifi controller block device - unblock grabs same IP
For a break fix client, I put in a Unifi switch and wireless APs. Today I got a call that they couldn't print. After a few minutes I realize that there is a duplicate IP on the network. The copier guy used a static IP on the copier and put it in the DHCP range. He also went around and set up people with direct TCP/IP printing.
In the Unifi controller I see that an android device picked up the IP from the DHCP server. I hit the block link from Unifi and the copier starts pinging again and jobs start spitting out of the copier. I grabbed the MAC of the copier and set a reservation on the DHCP server. Then I decided I should probably enable the blocked android device.
I was expecting it to try to connect and grab a new IP, but it didn't. It tried to use the one that it had before. Short of tracking down the offending android device, is there another way to force it to grab a new IP? I might just wait a day and then enable it again since the user will probably take the device home and then when it reconnects it will reach out to the DHCP server again.

cell phone forensics
Does anyone have any experience reviewing cell phone forensics? I have a lawyer that is a client of mine that asked me about it. I've never seen a cell phone forensic report before, and I have a bunch of other work, so I'm really not interested. Does anyone have any experience with this? Let me know.

I have done a 60 camera system at a huge hog farm with Ubiquiti. It is always the IOPS. I just broke mine up between 3 servers. Not the prettiest thing to do but that is what I had to do. Ran each with four 2TB drives in a RAID 10
Does the client have to log in to 3 different servers to switch between the cameras?
