    • ARP Traffic

How much ARP traffic is too much. In our environment we have about 140 devices on the same subnet. It seems as though every machine keeps track of where every other machine is. Sometimes even the router (meraki mx84) is sending out those requests 2 or 3 times per minute per device.

The switches are a mix of SG200, SG300, SF200, SF300 switches. Most of which just have never been configured other than what's default.

I just turned ublock off on mangolassi, i was surprised by all the stuff it was blocking. But I use it more for ads from ad networks, i'm not concerned about ads that they are hosting here.

I always did it DIY for the experience of setting up everything and then tweaking mysql etc. If you weren't looking to do that, then one of the ones mentioned would be a great alternative..

Does it block it in the thread, too?

That's weird, though. They just blanket block images with the size in the description? That will randomly break who knows what.

And those who are blocking ads just by size generally know that as well and will unblock things as needed.

How do they know when something is needed?

I block all that stuff by default with ublock - if a site shows up funny or seems like i'm missing a key part of it - i unblock stuff on ublock. Would I install ublock for our average end user - no - they don't seem to understand it. Ad block plus seems to be a bit friendlier to the average user.

    • RE: Virtualization build

This reminds me of when I went to canada to purchase some older equipment for a friend of mine. Going into canada was easy. Coming back was the problem. I went through the normal passenger lane unaware that I should have gone through the commercial side both in and out. So coming back in they sent me over to the "building". I filled out the paper work to declare what I had in the van and described the equipment. They made some phone calls to confirm it was allowed back in the USA. I was unsure why it wouldn't be allowed back into the country, as it was manufactured for use in the USA - and was stamped as such. The customs person was very understanding, and suggested that next time have a broker do it. Or at least call the customs office ahead of time to find out what paper work you need to have filled out.

It likely didn't help that the equipment was paid for in cash, with no receipt ($500), and it was control equipment that is used to monitor temperature and pressure at a power plant....

Traveling into canada even for a meeting with a company requires a letter of introduction from that company explaining the purpose of the meeting, and whether or not there will be any "sale" or "transactional value" of the meeting. We were going up to meet with a banner ad platform in toronto and got sent to the building to explain ourselves.

    • RE: Nextcloud Box is out - feedback welcome!

      I'd second Jason's comment.

I had looked at this device, but I'm more concerned with the hardware limitations of the pi2 than I would be of anything else. We have Cterra C200 devices currently and even though they have gigabit ethernet they often often can sustain read / write speeds in the 100mbit range because the CPU on the controller is just maxed out.

You'd think that you'd block by size then, not by name.

If the ad filters were written to block by size then they would. But most ad filters are just written to block requests based on things like domain name and file name. i.e. if at the firewall layer you block requests to sites like these below you can block a whole lot at the firewall without ever downloading the ads into your network

@Dashrender said in uBlock Origin blocking over 1000 requests:

      For example,

      https://mangolassi.it/uploads/files/ml/do-ssd-virtual-servers-banner-160x600.jpg

This is blocked from loading an image. But if you change the name to *do-ssd-virtual-servers-banner-16000x60000.jpg it will probably work, because the string 160x600 isn't in there anymore.

So it is blocking images with a specific size notation in them? That's crazy.

Not really - if you look at the internet in general - most requests for files that are 160x600 or 728x90 or the common IAB standard ad sizes would make sense. No one puts pictures on their sites that are those sizes. Would you size an image 300x250 or 300x600 -- not likely -- but are they iab standard sizes -- yup. Since most advertisers and other marketers will include the ad size in the image file path it makes sense to block it.

well i guess pasting the url of an ad just shows the ad, I removed the domain portion.

I wonder why first party ads are being blocked? Is uBlock Orgins blocking based on filename?

filename (-728x90., -ad1, -160x600., /160x600_, -ad2., -160x600., -160x600-) -- all of those would be avoided by randomizing the file name.
