I think that the April date might be a little soon, but I think it could be coming in 2015 at some point.

We looked at it seriously before going with Windows 8. It's the best desktop I've used yet. Very slick.
I thought you did make the conversion, but then converted back?
Yes, we did
Why did you go back?

RE: Network Mapping tool / software

I am looking for a program that will map my network and tell me what and where (what ports) the equipment is. The more detail I can get the better.
Does anyone have any suggestions. I currently have LANSurveyor express which I have had for years but it is not really what I need.
Free is better but low cost software would be ok also. Thanks for your input.
I always here good things about The Dude, but have never actually used it. http://www.mikrotik.com/thedude

This just hit the wire from what I can tell and I can't find an open site with information on the suit so I don't know anything about it in detail. But it will be interesting anyway.
I just downloaded waze a couple of days ago. I haven't got to use it much, but I do like the idea of it. Hopefully it doesn't go away.

Seems like a good choice to me.
I agree. We re-imaged a couple xp machines with Mint and I have heard no complaints from our end users. It works great for us.

How well does it work with other software. Lets say I had another app I wanted to push, like Office or some other app?
The pro version does come with Office 2010 as an option to install. I haven't tried building my own package to deploy yet, but I feel confident that I would be able to because they make it pretty straightforward and give good directions.

We also started using PDQ a couple months ago and it has worked quite well. It makes deploying/upgrading software much easier than Group Policies. Well worth the money.
I was amazed by how simple it was. I'm really happy with it.

I use Fedora on my primary laptop, mostly because I'm so used to CentOS/RedHat-based distros on servers and Fedora hasn't given me too many problems over the years. For the last few weeks I've been running it with KDE rather than Gnome 3 (the default) and overall I think I like it better. My other laptop has FreeBSD 10 with XFCE, although I'm planning to try PC-BSD 10 on it soon (it previously had PC-BSD 9.)
I recently installed Ubuntu on my desktop (despite telling myself a long time ago I would never do that again) due my friends roping me into playing Rust on Steam and Steam giving me all kinds of weird problems on Fedora 20 (driver issues, and some shortcuts in the game not working properly.) Ubuntu 12.04 with Steam has been working quite flawlessly, so I'm reluctantly running it on there. I actually don't mind Unity, it's Canonical as a company that I'm not as fond of.
I haven't tried Mint/Cinnamon although will may give it a try the next time I find myself reinstalling one of the laptops.
I don't mind Unity either, but in my experience with Ubuntu I always run into some sort of video problems. Otherwise Ubuntu Unity has treated me well. I installed on my mother's computer after getting sick of fixing because of malware, she's has never had any issues with it.

Quick PDQ Deploy Pro Review
A couple of months ago, we tested and decided to purchase pdq deploy pro. I will have to say this product is one product has made my job easier. PDQ Deploy remotely installs software with a couple clicks of a button, and the pro version comes loaded with a bunch of pre-configued packages. A small list of some of the software is below.
Adobe flash
Adobe Reader
CutePDF
Java
Microsoft Silverlight
Firefox
IE
GIMP
Chrome
Itunes
VLCOnce you decide what package you would like to install you simply download the package, select it, add a "target" in which you can select from Active Directory, Spiceworks, and IP address. Once your target is selected, you simply click deploy and the install starts. All installs are done in the background so you can do the installs while your users are logged in.

I have used Mint and like it, however due to business needs moved back to Windows.
We deployed Mint in our environment to a couple places that had older systems and all the users need to do is access the web and do edit documents. This has worked out great because we haven't had any crashes, viruses, and the computers are running faster than ever.

Favorite Linux Desktop Distro
I was wondering what people are using for Linux desktop distros. I'm a huge fan of Crunchbang and Mint, but I'm always finding a reason to install a different distro to try out.

GoAccess
I started running GoAccess on one my Ubuntu web servers running Nginix and I would have to say that I love the look and feel of it. It only took one command to install it and then the command to start it and I was up and running. If you are looking for a free open-source tool to watch your web server I would recommend it.

Does anyone one else trust the system restore?
At the office we disable system restore via group policy because it never seemed to actually fix anything and tied up valuable storage space (we use SSDs on all our laptops, so sometimes space is a bit tight.) Also we have a couple users who know enough to be dangerous and would run system restore a dozen times to try and fix their own problems, and in a few cases it caused problems for some of our applications.
Agreed, user-initiated system restores are almost always a disaster eventually. I've seen a lot of shops try this and never hear good results. It sounds good, but people get crazy. They treat it like rebooting.
To me it also seems like the restores are getting longer and longer and sometimes once you start one you can't stop it.
