I know there are those who hate Outlook. This comment isn't for you.

AutoPick for meetings is my new favorite feature.

Don't know it, what does it pick?

I add people and resources to a meeting invite, hit Autopick and it skims through all the calendars to the next time everyone is available.

I'm trying to play through KotOR 2. I played through most of it a long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away), but I don't recall actually finishing the game.

Same, I need to play it again and finish it.

I've have finished Peragus so many times...

    • Using AI to handle scheduling

I was having a discussion today about how scheduling is one of my more repetitive, stress-inducing tasks (not going into why it is stress inducing). So I started looking at what tools were out there that could do this for me. Have any of you ever looked into it?

The one that I looked at the most is https://x.ai/.

tactical wargame mechanics of DnD 4e (or so I've been told)

Yeah, they pretty much ripped it die roll for die roll from 4e from the people I've talked to.

The combat system was the thing I (and most gamers) hated the most about 4e.

This was quite a bit of fun. I'm not a minis and hexes gamer typically so I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I think it made a huge difference with how the mechanics of the various mechs worked out. It is a very tightly designed game. No one felt over powered compared to the rest, we ended up winning both scenarios, but it was by very narrow margins.

I've heard good things about Lancer to be honest. I'd like to try it at some point. I think the mechanics need to fit the setting and they do a much better job in this instance.

Mechanics need to fit intent. I have a hard time believing that the 4e need for pre-configuring grid based battles can be reconciled reasonably with any sort of decent narrative experience.

Curious how they try to handle the core rules being inherently incompatible with one of their stated goals.

It takes some work to wrap your mind around if you're more used to narrative systems. We played a quick encounter that was just mechs on a hex grid so that we could learn the mechanics and figure out how the rules worked. Once we got done we sat back and looked at each other and said "That was great, but I am having trouble wrapping my mind around how this connects with narrative." It took some time to get that sorted in our own heads, but it was doable. I found that once I had fully fleshed out my pilot that I was able to integrate the narrative into the tactical system. I think it just takes the right group of players.

Maybe 4e was the wrong comparison. I haven't played it, so I can't make an accurate comparison.

Did a ton of Lancer TTRPG over the weekend. Imagine the tactical wargame mechanics of DnD 4e (or so I've been told) combined with far future mechs, significantly easier mechanics, and the narrative of a modern, indie ttrpg.

The issue in this case is that the data is not required to be encrypted. But it's sold as a benefit. But it isn't like a HIPAA violation.

So, the Colorado law and some other state laws (may include CCPA) are mandating that certain PII data be encrypted. HB11-1824 has very few teeth to it at this point until someone gets breached, but I don't want to be the test case for the DA to try it out on.

      not authorized

Gotcha, so it's not a poorly written law but only applies in the case of not authorized cases.

Well, it will need to fleshed out via case law to determine what unauthorized really means and how you can verify the access or prove non access. The control is ahead of technology implementation in most organizations. We will see how it plays out. It is written in sufficiently broad terms that the access could be from an external access or an internal one.

IMHO the problem with movie/tv for SciFi and Fantasy is that generically speaking filmmakers do not truly understand what draws people to the genre. There is an assumption that it is graphics, violence, explosions, nostalgic IPs, sex, etc., when it really comes down to the stories that can be told and ideas explored within a universe that fundamentally makes sense. So, they make movies that are Pocahontas in space and wonder why people don't think it is amazing. Unfortunately they have massive marketing budgets so many people go and see the movies or watch the show and so it is a commercial success without actually landing with the real audience. If you want to see how hungry fans of the genre are for this content, look at how quickly the Critical Role animated TV show funded on kickstarter.

Well, at this point, what draws people to Star Wars is that stuff. That's why sci fi people generally don't like it anymore from what I can tell. Even the most die hard "I'm a geek millennial and have to like this stuff" fans that I know are starting to think it's bad. The people you'd be sure would overlook that stuff because it's so marketed at them.

Star Wars was never a sci fi, even Lucas made a point of this in the 1970s. It's set in space, but that's not enough to be a sci fi. Fantasy, yes. Action, yes. But not sci fi.

I listed Sci Fi and fantasy. Star Wars is Science Fantasy in my book. Either way it doesn't change my statements because I am addressing the whole spectrum.

In the state of Colorado the law is written such that if an encryption key is obtained the data is considered compromised.

Obtained by whom? The customers, the vendors, someone else?

Does that mean if the rightful customer has the key, that they must consider their system compromised even though they should have the key?

It is a privacy law. If someone who is not authorized has both the data and the key the data is considered to have been exposed and the company is liable under HB11-1828. If the key is public then any access to the data would be considered a breach and exposure.

Facebook ad campaign helped Donald Trump win election, claims executive

A Facebook executive has claimed the company was "responsible" for Donald Trump being elected as US president.
Andrew Bosworth, a close friend of the firm's chief Mark Zuckerberg, made the remark in an internal memo last week. Mr Bosworth said Mr Trump was not elected because of "misinformation", but "because he ran the single best digital ad campaign I've ever seen from any advertiser. Period". The memo was leaked to The New York Times before he made it public. Mr Bosworth's note discussed many of Facebook's high-profile scandals, including alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Mr Bosworth told staff that it was not foreign interference that helped Mr Trump get elected, but his well-planned campaign.

Hmmmm... I thought voters were responsible for politicians becoming elected. Who knew??

Nope, your vote means nothing because of the electoral college.

That isn't 100% true. 29 states require that the elector vote for the candidate of the party they were selected to represent and (to varying degrees) do not have an option to change from that. https://www.nass.org/node/131.
