Legit queston as I'm still a noob and going through @scottalanmiller Linux courses. Could you do port knocking in addition to IP locks, GA, and SSH key/passphrase for almost 5FA at that point?? Seems like all of those would be a hard to beat system.

RE: What Avaya Has to Teach Us About Closed Source
Seeing as I work for an Avaya Reseller/Partner, this is not good. I've tried to convince management we need to go into a different direction (as in selling and supporting open source solutions) but seems to fall on deaf ears.

RE: WAN Link - Fiber to Copper Changing to Fiber Only
I am in a similar boat. My ISP will only hand-off single mode LC at our co-location facility. I'm looking at Allied Telesis myself:

RE: Setting up FreePBX 13 - Host Choice
DID's lead to lots of problems ESPECIALLY when changing providers. My current company we are trying to reduce DID's because we have over a thousand, based on a lot of legacy systems and ports that were done just blindly rather than surgically. Trying to port those 1000 current DID's to a new provider is a nightmare to say the least!
The trunk to employees rule, the term I've heard is "call path". Specifically you want 1 call path for each call. You need to calculate that based on employees as well as conference calls. I do not have an hard/fast rule but you need to check with your SIP trunk provider as to the number of call paths allowed. then check again, then check a third time! I've already been burned but that carrier everyone loves to hate because they sold us supposedly 100 call paths on the trunk and it turns out they never turned on the feature (default is 25, first big conference we had with outside users many could not connect).

RE: To replace or repair
I liek Mitsubishi. Personal expereince, we have a Mitsubishi split unit for one of our "telco" rooms at one of our offices in Buffalo, NY. Installed in 2007 So far only 1 major repair (blower motor on outside unit failed in 2013, repair approx $1500 if I remember correctly) and we do yearly maintenance with our current HVAC vendor as part of a overall service contract (don't have cost in front of me). Unit has served us well. We moved the equipment out and into a real data center last year so the load on it now is rather light.
with HVAC its always the installer or company and not so much the unit. Try and get several quotes you will find a vast difference in prices and services offered. Check out sites like HeatingHelp.com (the forums are kinda like a MangoLassi for the HVAC crowd) -

Anyone hear of or play with SipXCom??
Back on the good old days when I walked to school uphill both ways in a blizzard (true story!) Nortel sold a product called the SCS-500 which was an "open source" IP phone system When they went belly up a company called Ezuce came in and started reselling it. We stopped carrying it/supporting it years ago. Was looking around at other "sip based' phone systems to play with now that the market is shrinking and found Ezuce is still around and has an Open Source product called SipXCom. Anyone have any experience with it??

Worth my time to play with it? -
RE: Dell Power Edge R330 Issue: CPU 0000 CPU1 Internal error (IERR)
Check that one of your memory sticks did not come loose in shipment; namely reseat them all. If that does not fix, call Dell Support. I had that error on a new server and it turned out we had a loose module

RE: Troubleshooting Postfix Authentication to Relay
is there some sort of anti-spoofing settings with Intermedia? We use Mimecast here and Mimecast blocks any email from outside with a from address of "ourdomain.com" by default with their Anti-Spoofing policy.

RE: Weekend Plans
Breakfast with Santa at church tomorrow; one of parishioners has the perfect hair and bear already for it so its always a fun time; then we get to go and cut down our tree and decorate it on Sunday.

RE: What are you holiday traditions?
When my first son was born, my dad gave us a hard cover printing of A Visit from St. Nicholas (Twas The Night before Christmas). On Christmas eve when we come back from church we all get into our Christmas jammies (admittedly, yep even Daddy too), lower the lights and do a very slow reading, complete with sound effects (sleigh bells on the door suddenly ring thanks to a piece of dental floss, that kind of thing). This year he's 4 and keeps asking me every night when we're going to read the Saint Nick book!

RE: analog video stream
This may work for you if you have old Android or iPhones.. We use Presence at home to turn one of our old iphones into a kid monitor in the playroom. Free for use. Load the app on one device as the "camera" and then load the app on say an ipad or an android tablet as the monitor. May work with one of the Android TV sticks as well.

RE: SIP registrations failing for 2 phones
What Jared said. We have a location on Comcast with a static IP. Comcast was supposed to send us a modem only, but send a modem/router instead. Even though we worked with Comcast support to bridge their piece of crap and could get our router connected, it never ever worked. FINALLY (after I think 3 maybe 4 support calls and truck rolls) thelast truck tech replaced it with an arris modem only and we got it to work. You may just have to call them and be as persistent as possible.

Windstream and Earthlink to merge

We haven't been "hit" yet though I getting occasional alerts form some of our remote offices unable to reach our colocated stuff.

RE: Home Surveillance System (Outdoors)
I just started to check out some solutions myself. I want to explore the UniFi video equipment from Ubiquiti for our offices. We have overhangs so figured 2 or 3 cameras at each location with spare desktop running linux for the vr portion.
