The younger one turns 2 this weekend. Big picnic planed for Sat, except that most of the guest list can't make it now due to either other commitments or personal issues. SO I guess I'll be eating nothing but burgers and hot dogs for the next week.
Sunday, might actually finally get my lab "stuff" moved out of the garage into the basement and set up we will see

    • RE: preferred UPS for desktop computer

@Mike-Davis I have the previous generation of this model, without the LCD panel:
      https://www.tripplite.com/OmniSmart-LCD-120V-1500VA-810W-Line-Interactive-UPS-Tower-LCD-display-USB-port-Energy-Star~OMNI1500LCDT
Keeps the wife's desktop, monitor and IP phone (as well as our router) up for a good hour before the battery runs low. Tripp Lite's PowerAware software is OK, it does shut the desktop down when it reaches a threshold (I think I have it set at 50%) and does show all cool status of the power incoming to the UPS itself including spikes and sags.

Avoid APC Back-ups models like the plague. We have had 2 of them fail to provide juice even after batteries were changed. I use a Tripp Lite at home and have never had an issue

@EddieJennings Definitely document your experience with leaving them. Our contract is up Feb 2018 and Myself, our COO and our carrier services guy all want to leave them and port our numbers (and we have a LOT of numbers) out from them

@travisdh1 wow that's cheap. Was going to suggest looking around here (Buffalo, Western New York)but don't think we can compete on cost of living.

    • RE: ExaGrid

We used Exagrid at my former employer. Ours was paired with BackupExec for Exchange and file backups.
They were VERY expensive even back then (this was 10 years ago) but for the ease of restores and the early data dedupe features, could not be beat. Today would probably be looking at Veeam and some low cost NAS box.

    • RE: Laser printer sometimes trips an APC and shuts off computer??

I had the same issue at my old house. We had one wall outlet where I had the laser printer (one of the old Laserjet's built like a tank) and one of those "cheap" APC power strip looking UPS things plugged in. When the printer would come out of sleep mode the UPS would trip, and as @Mike-Davis above suggested, yep I had a voltage drop in the outlet itself. Same thing though the stuff plugged in the UPS would reset every time, even after I installed a fresh battery. My guess was something to do with the UPS being a switchover and not a true on-line UPS. My solution was to replace the power strip UPS with a "real" Tripp Lite UPS (one that looks like a box and takes 2 batteries).
