But receiving an order for work via a Text Message seems odd - I'd definitely request that it be sent via an email for confirmation.

I agree that this feels odd, especially for the type of request.

Yeah it does.. almost like intentionally off the record..

So without a UTM device how are you monitoring the network and locking down the traffic?

I know there are other methods but a UTM seems to provide an easy way to accomplish this in an SMB environment

Netflow on your router then another device (IDS/IPS) can look at traffic and modify to block it if needed. Ours is actually called a Network Behavior Anomaly Detection. There's open source ones too I'm sure.

unless the .msi of the installer itself is the cause. I used .exe for manual install.

Not always a lot of times once a bad install is done it's not as easy as doing a reinstall.

We do merger's all the time. as a very large company and we are always buying up little guys doing neat stuff.

#1 thing, is don't go to fast with the transitions. You never no what you are going to break do it in stages. Setup a domain trust first to get things going (after initial inspection to check for virus production, security etc). Also if you have a legal department check with them. In many cases they will want DATA separation for 1-3 years for legal reasons.

      1. networks use different IP schemes (i.e. A - 172.16.1.x/24 and 10.0.0.x/24)
This situation is a bit easier assuming the default Gateway in company A can be multi-homed (have two or more internal networks).

That's adding complexity (and Latency) for no reason.. Just rescope. You almost always have to rescope with mergers anyway.

This would be a case to move them to Office 365 for their email portion at least. You can easily migrate them all over to O365 exchange and have multiple domains for people to be receiving at.

They say that they have a dependency that O365 cannot address.

      What is that?

    • RE: Domain Administrator or (s)? Best practices?

I wouldn't include admin anywhere in account names makes it to obvious. After all anyone can do an LDAP lookup (and there for any software) even as standard user.

For example ours are first.last for normal and for admin we use (without the parenthesis) (firstinital)(last name) or (firstinital)(middle initial)(last name).

All built in admins on domain are renamed to random names. And the local administrator is deleted with a new one created with a random name (this is so the SID will not be the same)

Personally, it feels like the FBI's backing off with a claim of a third party is every bit as likely that they feel they are loosing the case and want to back away from this before precedent is set.

I would not be surprised if there is a programmer.. maybe one who left apple or was terminated and has it out for the company that can do this.

Interesting - If that's true, I have serious doubts about their entire security model!

Yes, for sure. The question would be.. is there a back door, a known weakness or did someone steal the key. If the later, the FBI can't use it and the evidence would be useless.

Actually is that true? I don't know the law, but if the FBI themselves weren't involved in the theft, are you sure they can't use it?

If they pay someone to steal, they are very much involved in the theft. If you hire a hitman, you still go to jail.

But the US government has made themselves above the law and has Sovereign immunity from being sued in most cases..

Yes, but it is not about being sued, it's about being able to use it in court. The FBI is, without a doubt, going to act like a common criminal given the chance and their total immunity to the law (read: they have suspended all pretence of law.) but even thought they themselves are immune, they can't use that in court as the court still has to use the law.

Yeah I just meant they won't be legally held responsible like they should be.

Prediction: 2017/18 will bring an Intel chip with 64+ lanes and this will not be an issue.

      I think so too.

I think Thunderbolt will be the best physical interface rather than the current PCIE form factors too. Mainly it allows the flexiablity like SATA with greater throughput. It would allow you to use cables (internal or external) and could plug into a blackplane once the layout of the drives are standarized. And could even allow dasiy chaining.

      eyeroll

Go design a kick ass widget and put a thunderbolt connector on it, then see what it costs to license.

Hopefuly Intel will ditch the licesning costs at some point.. No other interface is doing that. They are just killing it doing that.

While sure people like Scott want to do this crazy 4/8K video stuff, that's either a maxed out prosumer thing, or clearly mid class business stuff, and you should be through some real capital at solving that problem, not chump change.

If you are dealing with a video production business, which is a very common thing, you need this all of the time.

Sure, but it's not going to be cheap!

Sure it is. 10GigE is not that expensive. You could get desktop motherboards with dual 10GigE in 2014: http://www.anandtech.com/show/8781/asrock-x99-ws-e-10g-motherboard-review-dual-10gbaset-for-prosumers

Err I mean to the Mac..

Oh well, if you have a Mac, nothing is going to be cheap.

      Thunderbolt to 10GBe is $500

The first one I found is $700. But that's a super high end board with dual 10GigE built in and able to handle 128GB of RAM from 2014. If you are doing high end video processing, a few hundred extra for your Mobo is going to be expected anyway. This would not add that much onto the overall system cost. Often people are dropping $3K on these machines already.

LOL - like I said - NOT Cheap!

Then how much is a switch, assuming you need one? The chassis will be rather expensive as well for those drives.

You could just directly plug in without a switch if needed. Quad ports and such will do no good unless the PC using it has the same number of ports anyway..

Exactly my experience, but I will add that the more complicated the product is the lower it's chances of working properly. It's a sliding scale from "meh, yeah, ok" to "possessed by demons" to "complete and utter failure to chooch"

At a former job we bought a serial to USB from them for a PLC once... never again. It did funky things and inserted random characters into programs. We returned it for a replacement... the second one didn't work at all.

Oh sweet jesus those are the exception. NEVER buy one unless it's straight from these guys. Trust me, I spent years doing electronics engineering programming chips and bit banging

      http://www.ftdichip.com/Products/Cables/USBTTLSerial.htm

Yea,.. there is a lot of fakers that just won't work on those FTI drivers... ugh.

The driver has a verification software in the download you can check the chip with though.. in Windows 7 the fake ones would still work I believe.

I've saw a lot of this debate on various forums. "Will on-premise IT support be replaced by MSPs and/or the cloud?" MSPs displacing (not replacing)

I would says that's sensationalized. Sure it will happen at many SMBs but it's not something that is going to happen everywhere. especially not in the Enterprise sector.
