If you need gear like that on a shop floor the de facto answer is VDI. Not always the answer, but it is the place where most people would look first. Put a low cost, fanless thin client or zero client on the shop floor and put the hefty gear where it is protected like in a server closet - clear, cool area and physically secure too.

The natural reaction is VDI. But you could do just a remote desktop with a physical desktop being used - just remotely. That way you keep the gear you have, keep the model that you have, keep the approach that you have but you make everything more flexible.

Remote access could be RDP, NX, ICA, something special or even a distance KVM connection.

Or a remote dell precision rack mount computer. What are they doing engineering stuff on the shop floor anyway? That's odd. Usually you finalize that stuff for approval and then just feed it into the machines.

    • OwnCloud On Windows

I know it's not officially supported anymore but has anyone tried it? It would not have plugins just basic upload place for clients to upload drawing files.

Hmmm... not aware of PHP being more limited on Windows. A little slower, but only a tiny bit.

What's driving you to want ownCloud on Windows? If I'm given my druthers, Suse is where I want it.

Would love to but we have to limit our Linux use anymore. Seems Ernst & Young doesn't know how to audit windows hardly and linux is a big issue to them.

    • Leaving Dell

Anyone else contemplating leaving dell? We've seen their quality drop a lot for desktops and laptops in the past 6-12 months.

Who are you using? Reality is there is only 1 other company for us to really consider and that's HP.

What VPN are you using? It sounds like split tunneling may not be setup correctly, or the proxy server is not setup to disable correctly.

Likely your domain functional level needs to be upgraded to support windows 10.

Domain functional level has nothing to do with Client OSes.

I was just told by other people they've been having this issue because of UNC path hardening in windows 10.

Interesting. But in a virtualized environment this doesn't mean anything except for the host OS. You'd need console access and it does not work over SSH/Telnet.

    • Windows 10 Licensing

Now that windows 10 is accepting Windows 7 Keys to activate what does that mean for imaging rights? Do we still have to have them do inplace upgrades to get windows 10 and then image or can we image activate with the windows 7 Pro OEM key and then change it to the Pro MAK?

You have offices big enough to run UniFi gear but too small for a single server? Not that that seems impossible just unlikely.

Yeah, and a Raspberry pi can run this and a lot cheaper too. and can do other stuff.. This is obsolete when they start changing their platform much.

These are the only supported options on the Unifi.. for 10GB.

      10GBase-SR

      Fiberstore SFP-10G85-3M MMF
      DAC/Twinax

      Addon SFP-10G-PDAC1M-AO
      Juniper ex-sfp-10ge-dac-1m - (Amphenol 584990001 Rev A)
This is a 10g DAC that appears to link up at 1g when both ends are plugged into the two SFP slots of the ES-24-250W
I haven't tested sending traffic over this cable, as I only have one ES-24-250W, and Juniper equipment wants to link up at 10g when using this DAC
      MikroTik S+DA0001
      Molex 74742-0001

Well, I need to build a new image any way - so how should this be done?

If I use Open License media, as soon as the machine comes onto my network it will register with my KMS server. This is no good as the underlying hardware won't be on file with MS as upgraded.

I do have another network I can use to get to the internet. I guess I'll install using the Open License media and see if I can put ... no I don't have a Windows 8.1 key because 8.1 came pre-installed and there's no stickers anymore.

I personally consider it to much to ask to try to pull that out of the BIOS before upgrading on a massive scale.

      So now what?

If you already have a KMS server, why worry with extracting the BIOS keys?

That's only for the Volume not for the base license. if you are just using imaging rights.

    • Cisco AutoSmart Port

Trying to configure these at a remote site..

On the 2960s (12.2) models it works fine and on the 2960x (15.0) It does not.

      All I'm going is

macro auto device phone ACCESS_VLAN=XX VOICE_VLAN=XX
      macro auto global processing

The commands work fine on both just it does not do as expected when a phone is attached except on the 2960s models.
