RE: Hyper-V dynamic memory - reason not to use?
@dafyre said in Hyper-V dynamic memory - reason not to use?:
I've only heard that it's a bad idea to use on things like SQL Servers and such. I see no reason not to enable it for anything you expect to be constantly fine tuning the memory usage.
I have it enabled on my VDI VMs here. I'd probably enable it on file servers, and IIS servers. Probably not on DCs though.
Just my 2c worth.
SQL will eat up as much as you give it so it's a bad idea.

RE: Time to gut the network - thoughts?
I'm not sure why people use VLANS thinking it's QOS heck most of the time VoIP doesn't need QoS on the LAN until you get big anyhow..
We use VLANs for security and logical separation but if you have no ACLs then there's no security.
We use VLANs for the phones most for sanity.. We don't want to see 23,000 phone in our dang DHCP server nor pay for windows device cals for non-domain users with phones. DHCP is handled by routers for phones. Secondly, Phones are setup by a TFTP server which is handed out by DHCP. Doing this on the main network will mess with PXE boot for clients.

Hospitality TV
So I got an LG 37LH265H 37" 1080p TV that's retired from a hotel. The manual says to unlock the installer menu, to setup the channels and such that you keep hitting menu until the normal menu locks up then enter 9876 and enter. Doesn't seem to work on mine. Any ideas?

They need to upgraid from a single hamster to a RAIHAM 10... Redundant Array of Inexpensive Hamsters 10.
They only have about a 2 year life span so they need to be hot swappable.

@Jason right? I did sneak 1 pic of the rack we took over to the colo, but I had to be really sly. I wouldn't dare try to get another one, but dammit, I was proud of my accomplishment.

Solutions Expert.. Licensing advice.
We have a "Sr. Solutions Expert" at a reseller tell us we did not need to buy CUBE licensing because Cisco says they do not enforce it. (He says in his email signatures he has a CCIEx2)
This is what they are referencing: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/ios-xml/ios/voice/cube/configuration/cube-book/voi-cube-licensing.pdf
On page 7 it says :Q. Is CUBE Licensing enforced?
No, CUBE is a paper-based honor license (no file to install) that allows you to run the CUBE RTU
(Right-to-Use) feature set after you have the UCK9 license installedIs this not the same case as CALs meaning they aren't enforced by a mechanism but you still need to buy to use.

RE: Priority Mail Express 1-Day
Package didn't make it. USPS won't honor the guarantee either. They say because I bought online they won't refund in the PO. Online it says you can't do it there and must do it and the post office.
I guess that's how they get out of refunds.. offer no way to file them.

How to demonstrate fake raid
I figured out how to demonstrate fake RAID best to somone tonight, since they thought I was full of crap since windows has the driver built in the install even sees them as one drive. Take a USB with ESXi on it and boot it, try to make a data store and show them it sees each drive, not the Fake Raid. Works wonders to show people what's really going on.

RE: The CEO of NEST resigns
Nest is crap. Ask anyone that knows about HVAC. They end up costing you more in in energy bills. If you want a good smart themostat the Ecobee or a Honeywell Smart themostat are the ones to get.

Cloudatcost 80% off
Bahahahaha.. I just saw this. Pretty funny. Wonder if it's 80% off the price or 80% off the service?

Not really, It takes maybe 30min (complete, until it's ready for the user) for our guys to image a computer from WDS.
It takes me about 20 minutes to prepare a computer from unboxing it to giving it to the user. So that proves my point - imaging IS slower
20 Min without an image? Do you not get windows updates caught of before giving to a user? Do you not install any additional software and test it?

Never used CloudatCost, can someone bring me up to speed on what is so funny?
I mean their prices are kinda weird... $70 for a dual core, but 50% off of that... one time? Err... one time, per month? I don't get it.
Just a one-time payment and you never pay again. It's tempting, but the service is absolutely unusable and has been for going on several months. Their API has been down for nearly a year.
They run these 80-90% off sales every other friday.
Now that's pretty funny. So people paid for a service they haven't used in... a year?
Most of us got our money back from Credit Cards/Paypal.
How'd you swing that? Wouldn't CloudatCost have to issue the refund?
Nope. The money is taken back from them. They didn't provide the service they agreed too.

RE: How does MDADM deal with a sudden power loss
There is no correct answer here. It will depend on a lot of things. Size of files been written, speed of drives etc. You could have slight data loss. More data being written and the slower the drives the greater the chance of more data loss or corruption.
