      The UPS is failing.

As mentioned there is some other underlying power problem if a laser printer kicking on is causing a severe power voltage drop.

But even still, the UPS is designed for this purpose and failing.

      Buy a new one.

I bet you that the UPS is failing because of the recurring problems with the electrical. Basically, the APC is crappy and it was made to perform more work than it was willing to do so now it's just toast.

@scottalanmiller said in MS VPN connection; Account locked:

To sign into the domain, your VPN goes up first. To sign into the laptop, you sign in cached and then fire up the VPN. There is a reason that VPN-first systems like OpenVPN, Pertino, ZeroTier, etc. are so important. They let you do things like central revocation because they always get updates from AD.

Correct. this is the problem. always.

How does that work when they are on a wifi connection that doesn't connect until after they log in to their laptop?

You said these are surfaces devices, and that makes me presume that they're Windows 10. If you STOP and LOOK at your login screen, you'll see that you can connect to wifi before logging in.

I looked over the thread seeking information on the VPN and didn't see what kind of vpn you're using. Is it MS? Cisco? OpenVPN? Do these VPN tools that you're using allow you to connect at sign-in? If you're using MS VPN, did you consider using DirectAccess?

    • RE: What Are You Doing Right Now

So, apparently, the GRT hasn't been working in BExec on our main file server and someone else put the jobs on hold so it wouldn't show as a failure, and I wasn't notified of the failures via email as normal (because no job ran) so I never bothered to look. Now someone needs a restore and I have to restore a 2tb vmdk -somewhere- so I can open it and pull out less than a gig of data. FML

Why does Cisco still use Java? OMG I hate Cisco and WebEx. Is this 2002?

Did you hear about the latest security faux pass? Apparently a lot of the WebEx plugins have dll files that will happily call programs that exist on the system. They've plugged the leaky ship, but so far have only blacklisted any domain other than WebEx.com.

I HAVE WebEx. It's just as bad as the rest of Cisco's crap. I can't believe anyone does business with Cisco voluntarily, it's so pathetic.

    • Does the LDAP role require RODC?

I've not yet tried to deploy an LDAP only server, and was wondering if it requires the RODC role, too? Can you do just LDAP on a server and still authenticate queries to a DC? Ex: <cloud server> queries <our LDAP> which queries the auth req from <our DC>. <Our LDAP> tells <cloud server> the results [pass|fail]. The alternate would be that the LDAP is an RODC and doesn't require the separate DC.

As a followon question: would a linux box be able to serve as the intermediate LDAP here, still authenticating the queries to a Windows domain?

    • 2010 Team Mailbox

I'm fishing for some opinions here on what people have done in the past to resolve a request wherein a team wants a single mailbox to be accessible by that team so they can pick items out and handle them? I know it sounds a lot like a ticketing system. I'm not looking for best practice (though I'm not averse to hearing about it), and really just want to rethink 'the old way' to see if there's something more efficient. Any concepts or previous experiences that people are willing to share?

They finally have some kind of working prototype? Nice. Been seeing it posted by gullible people that forward shit they know nothing about on Facebook for a couple years.

I've been hearing about it for a couple of years. It seems... interesting. I've been keeping my eye on it.

The trick is to actually keep producing it. Skully helmets is a great example of why you shouldn't pre-order and/or support indiegogo/kickstarters.

Lunch was some lovely sesame marinated lean pork over rice. But dinner last night was some grilled alpaca tenderloin. Highly recommended if you can find it. So tender and delicious.

Alpaca? Interesting. Management has been trying to find something more exotic to sell to their customers. Beef, pork, and chicken can only get so much buzz.

My chef neighbor found many exotic, farm-raised meats at a local specialty shop. Alpaca, water buffalo, bison, rabbit, etc. And if you have a Sprouts store near you, they often carry ostrich meat.

Alpaca can best be described as a cross between grass fed beef and pork. Light flavored and so tender, but still red. We cooked this to medium well and it was juicy and fork tender. I don't think you could overcook it.
