Does anyone have any tips on how to at least recover data from an iPhone 4 that will not boot up past the Apple Logo and they didn't have a backup on iTunes or iCloud? I've made many a search and nothing I've found, so far, has helped...

    • Alien Movies and Prometheus

I am a huge fan of the original ALIEN and ALIENS. ALIEN3 has some amazing visuals and the ASSEMBLY CUT added a lot of subtext to the film but ultimately, it was doomed by a poor plot. ALIEN RESURRECTION was just goofy and unnecessary but not without it's moments. And I have to admit...ALIEN VS. PREDATOR (the first one) was a supreme guilty pleasure and a ton of fun.

Which bring me to Prometheus. As flawed as that movie was, I do appreciate SOME backstory to ALIEN and the visuals of the film were awesome. It is too bad the writing was so flawed. And while this DOES get a little "nitpicky", this video sums the movie and it's flaws up:

Anyone else like this movie series?

And by the way, I've mentioned this before in older posts...the game ALIEN: Isolation is superb and is basically Alien 1.5. 🙂

Upgrading from Great Plains 2010 to Great Plains 2015. 95% of it done by our Dynamic's Consultant. But still, I'm the one they come to tomorrow if it isn't working great.

We're just starting to plan our upgrade......Got the consultant here for 3 days for planning stage.

I've converted most of the reports that I know of to the new GP instance...but we have spreadsheets out the yahoo and some do pull data from GP that I know will fall through the cracks...but as long as GP and it's messy plugins work at 7AM tomorrow, I can handle a few broken reports to fix...the consultant is doing all of this remotely...

Don't they backup to iCloud by default?

It is the shop manager...not technical at all and has had his iPhone 4 for years and didn't care about bells and whistles...calls, email, texts...he never bothered to back up to iCloud...I put him into a spare iPhone5 today and made sure he had iCloud on (also set up with OneDrive extra space for photo backup)...

Trying to figure out how much danger we are in with my wife, taking a "suggestion" from someone at WalMart, of dusting our carpets with almost two canisters of Sevin 5 dust to combat fleas. Came home late from work last night (windows updates night) and she had it all over the living room and hallway carpets...covering my face, I ran the vac over it twice and today, need to dust and clean surfaces...windows are open today...fans going...

Google searches turn up articles from major scaremongering information on this stuff to others saying it is OK to just be careful. Didn't know if I should call a home cleaning expert or not...

We slept through the night OK... 🙂

    • RE: Samsung Says Turn Off Galaxy Note 7

Sadly...I turned mine off for good. I have a Pixel XL on order. Currently using a Moto G4 until the Pixel arrives.

I have been offered to use and have an iPhone 7+ 256GB model as my daily driver but I just can't go iOS. It purely a preference than an prejudice. Plus, I like having file access upon plugging it in via USB. I don't like the whole iTunes Sync thing. I know I can copy photos from the phone to my PC for my main photo storage but can't simply delete from the file system.

    • Do So Called "Cell Phone Boosters" Work?

Our owner just purchased a beach house where the cell signal is bad. He said someone told them there are such devices called cell phone boosters...so I did some research and found something like this:

Do these things work? Do they boost the talk signal as well as data?

I have seen them work. A former/almost client of NTG has a dairy farm in rural NY and he had one. It made a big difference.

Hmmm...now to research the best reviewed device and on how to get these things going...he will rely on me to make it work when I can't be there physically...

    • RE: Samsung Says Turn Off Galaxy Note 7

Well, I received my Pixel but sales rep ordered the standard and not XL...I am so not a complainer but hard to go from 5.7" of the Note series to 5" and it is kind of small. So, sigh, once again, waiting for the XL to come in next month now. It has been an unsettled few months with the Note 7 and changing phones.

    • Printing on Wax Paper

Mark this down as one of the most unusual requests in a while...office manager needs me to print to wax paper so they can rub it off on to another kind of paper...I've run it through my inkjet a few times...first time it jammed...the last three times it did pull it through and print but lightly and the 4th time it jammed...

Anyone ever have to do this? And if so, any tips? A search didn't turn up much help...

    • "File Access Denied" Errors

We seem to get internment "FILE ACCESS DENIED" errors when creating or modifying files from a program called MBS (Metal Building Software). It basically hits the file server hard in creating and modifying files related to the job in MBS. It doesn't happen all the time but it is random when it does come back and when it does, they usually get several across a few day period. And oddly, it does seem to be the same people who get it.

      mbsFileAccess02.jpg

It doesn't seem to be a certain file that it is "making" as it is random. It just stops with that error, they go back to the top where it says AUTO and make the cells again and it will usually work (but sometimes providing the error one more time)

The only commonality is the users who get this error also use Lync Messenger. But if I turn Lync off for a few users (but not uninstall), it still happens. The users of this MBS software who do not have LYNC do not get this error. So it seems odd that this can be a coincidence...

If they copy the folder they are working on to their local C drive, the error doesn't happen...so it is something in the network or perhaps permissions.

Because this thing creates and modifies 100's of not 1000's of files when they make the cells, it could be encountering network congestion and it just stops with that error. And it is possible that these Lync users are all on the same switch but I am almost certain one of them isn't.

All workstations are Windows 7 Pro, 64bit and our server is 2012 R2 (VM's)...

I checked the logs on the domain controller, file server and workstation. NOTHING. I've contacted the software company and they are clueless as to what it is. So, was wondering if it could also be network related? Perhaps the switch these users are on?

      Any suggestions?

Do you think perhaps a dedicated NAS storage unit for this software suite may be an option? As mentioned, I never had this problem before when we were on a physical server and not on a VM/VDISK.

Faster storage may help. a NAS Device though would be risky they tend to use low end hardware you'd be better off using a Server Based NAS with some SSDs.

Agreed, but you should see if you are hitting I/O issues on your current array first, otherwise you will be dumping money into something that may not be an issue.

      Which hypervisor are you using?

      Hyper-V...server 2012 R2...

Ah, got it. You can monitor performance fairly easily then. Check out this article to see Disk I/O
      https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc768535(v=bts.10).aspx

Or you can download a Hyper-V performance monitor from ManageEngine
      https://www.manageengine.com/free-hyperv-performance-monitor/free-hyperv-performance-monitor-index.html

Thanks...I am really thinking we are starting to have performance issues...I wouldn't trade virtualization for anything now due to how fast backups are now...but it is time to fine tune it some and get to the bottom of quirky issues we've had lately.
