@dashrender Yes. First thing I checked.

I've been using C:\Windows\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds\ to drop in my custom Ctrl+Alt+Del Lock page wallpaper on about 60+ machines so far. Every time it applies instantly. I've come across one machine, however, that will not apply the change.

I was looking into alternative ways to do this with the Registry, involving a navigation to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background, and selecting the OEMBackground value and changing the hexadecimal to 1 from 0 to kick things off... (I thought maybe, just maybe this instructor had somehow figured out how to set this, and that it would take precedence over my change), but when I double checked this value on the machine that will not apply the wallpaper, this value is still 0.

Now, I know I could still use this last method, but not knowing why it's not applying is killing me.

Anyone have any experience with this issue and might be able to explain why it wouldn't take?

Also, I have tried restarting, shutting down, logging off, switching users to admin and trying, but none of these things have worked so far.

EDIT: I noticed the desktop wallpaper that's been assigned via right-click>set as desktop background kept dropping off to the default Windows 7 wallpaper upon reboot, so I set that in local Group Policy to pin it down for now. There is something fishy going on here. Ran sfc /scannow with Admin privileges but came up negative.

@black3dynamite Also, I tried adding RSAT in case it wasn't already installed and it's not even listed as an add-able feature. Learning as I go, so I'm going to see if it's already installed and that's why I can't add it.

@black3dynamite I did read that before, but Group Policy Remote Update Firewall Ports is not listed as a starter GPO on my server. I'm not certain why.

Hey guys. I've been trying to implement Group Policy on our computer labs, and I'm running into a lot of resistance. I've been reading and trying things for days, and have made some progress, but haven't yet gotten it to work. If I refer to anything incorrectly, please correct me.

I'm running Server 2012 R2 and trying to get it to apply on Windows 7 Professional workstations.

The workstations in this lab will be using a domain login "Student1", so I've put it and all workstation computers in an OU named "Lab1".

Pretty straightforward so far, but nothing was working so I started reading and reading and apparently you have to set Firewall permissions for WMI and RPC? So I found some walk-through's explaining both and completed them on the "Default Domain Policy" GPO, they look like this:

but am now getting this when I run "Group Policy Update" via right-clicking on "Lab1" OU:

This is an improvement as when I did this prior to setting those inbound rules, all stations failed. Also, although there are a few computers listed that appear to have taken the update, none of those workstations reflected any of the GPO's I've configured.

I've been working on this for 4 days, and am reaching out for any suggestions.

@dashrender I don't call the shots on that. I personally like 10, but everything we have at our organization is build on or with Windows 7 in mind. Plus, most of our users are older folk that if you threw a new OS at them, they would be calling me for every minor task because they hardly know how to set up a print job as it is.

@dashrender yea, those updates are ruthless for sure. Good point.

@emad-r Yeah, I learned that there isn't any specific software he needs, so I'm just going to literally copy his user folder and maybe the Pictures, Documents, and Music folders onto a thumb drive, give him a newer tower with a fresh 7 install and just drag and drop that over. Was still nice getting all these avenues of approach.

@dashrender I plugged the new HDD in using a USB 3.0 to 2.5" SATA III Hard Drive Adapter Cable. Made an image from Backup and Restore>Create a system image just this morning. Then I physically removed the old one from inside the tower and replaced it with the new one.

So I had an associate bring me his computer that is saying "imminent HDD failure".

I re-formatted a 160GB HDD I had laying around to NTFS to match the current 160GB failing HDD. Also created a DVD repair disk in the same instance.

I then pulled the old HDD out, and put in it's place the new HDD with the image I created, and booted from the repair DVD. I got the system repair from image option and started going through that but I almost instantly get this error:

"The System image restore failed.

Error details: Windows did not find any disk which it can use for recreating volumes present in backup. Offline disks, cluster shared disks or disks explicitly excluded by user will not be used by windows. Ensure that disks are online and no disks are excluded by mistake. (0x80042414)"

I've read that Windows back-up operations are shit but wanted to know, based on what I've told you thus far, if anyone had any tips about what I might have done wrong or an alternative route that does not involve third-party software. This is my first time dealing with a failing HDD and would appreciate if any of you could help as I'm really trying to learn all I can from you guys about IT.

@Reid-Cooper Don't read into that too much, it's just a random list of certs to illustrate my point. Literally just a list of certs I need for my current job, was told to look into for my current job, or I want to learn or am learning for leisure.

@scottalanmiller I've heard that A+ is a waste of my time from other people, namely my own boss. Unfortunately, it's a requirement for my job. I've been reading over the study guide for it, and I feel there are some bits of relevant data in there. Mostly just things I wanted to know, but didn't already.
