Some of you people are older than me.... just sayin'
Am I?
Yes don't you know I am only in my mid 20's (and will be forever and ever and ever)
Well, I'm in my mid 20's and that's without the repeating of the same birthday year after year

Home Lab, Multiple Servers on Repurposed Hardware- Feasible?
So, I'm thinking about building a home lab made of various servers and software, mostly for learning purposes and with very minimal traffic. These are my current specs:
-4GB RAM
-250GB hard drive
-Intel E7500 core 2 duo processor running at 2.93 GHz
-Onboard NICI intend to install/build these:
-VMWare Vsphere Hypervisor(free edition)
-Webserver
-PBX
-Veeam Backup (free edition)VMWare will hold the Webserver and PBX as virtual hosts. Does this seem feasible to you guys? Basically I'm operating on a budget somwhere between "Ha." and "Pick the paycheck you're pulling out of very wisely, and replace things on your current desktop. the old hardware can go to this."
A lot of jobs are looking for examples of things that I've done, and I want to be able to tout the current things listed, and use them if possible for home. I will be building a website to act as a portfolio on the webserver and detail the progress in all of this. If you have better suggestions than what I've listed, please let me know.

$2.50/user/mo for screen sharing. That's a bit expensive when Skype is free (but doesn't work, so I get the issue.)
Works fine for me as does Google Hangouts.
Chime feels like, we're Amazon, lets make yet another product.
Depends, can you call me on it? nope, because MS has their accounts all broken. So in reality, it doesn't work for you, it just makes it feel like it works for you.
Danielle thinks it works for her, too, but people with her in their user list see her account broken and have problems contacting her and her account will semi-randomly get deleted and show up wrong with images and details from old accounts she doesn't have any more and she, too, can't get calls to work to some people.
Because the issues with Skype are account based, people often feel that it "works for them" even when they too are experiencing issues.
"People"? You mean you. No one else. Don't say Gene, because his issues are not isolated to Skype.
Yea,.. Because well - It's Gene
I think there's something deeper than just Skype on your computer, maybe even at the OS level.
Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Well, looks like the server boot drive is dead. Looks like I'll get to upgrade that to XS7 after lunch. For now, everything is working how it's supposed to in a fail over scenario, and I knew it would before I had to juggle things around, yay.
what happened?
Root was in read only mode and I couldn't start/reboot anything from the console. That's all I know for sure at the moment.
XO restored everything we need to get by to the backup workstation I keep around for just this situation. Nobody else would know anything was wrong at the moment if I didn't tell them.
Well, sir, that deserves a beer and a celebration. I tip my hat to you, in your well thought out and designed DR plan. You are a gentleman and a scholar, and are held in high regard in my book.
I know it sounds sarcastic, but really it isn't. I've seen a few too many people get their servers and networks dropped hard due to a poor or non-existent DR plan.

RE: What Are You Currently Reading Outside of Tech
David Allen's Getting Things Done:The Art of Stress-Free Productivity. The book is more or less expanding on the concept that he created with the same name. So far it has helped me quite a bit.
Also, Jordan Peterson's 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos. Okay, I haven't actually gotten to reading it yet, but I just bought it last weekend and am excited to get there.

RE: Creating a Shortcut for Chrome Incognito with Proxy Settings
@wrx7m said in Creating a Shortcut for Chrome Incognito with Proxy Settings:
I am trying to see if I can use PS to create the shortcuts. Not sure how to get this path to work with the quotes it needs.
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --incognito --proxy-server=squid1.domain.com:3128 --user-data-dir="%LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Squid1\User Data"
This is the template I am using.
# Create a Shortcut with Windows PowerShell $TargetFile = "$env:SystemRoot\System32\notepad.exe" $ShortcutFile = "$env:Public\Desktop\Notepad.lnk" $WScriptShell = New-Object -ComObject WScript.Shell $Shortcut = $WScriptShell.CreateShortcut($ShortcutFile) $Shortcut.TargetPath = $TargetFile $Shortcut.Save()
Took me a minute, but got it working. The template you are using doesn't account for arguments. Give this a shot:
$TargetFile = "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" $args = '--incognito --proxy-server=squid1.domain.com:3128 --user-data-dir="%LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Squid1\User Data"' $ShortcutFile = "$env:UserProfile\Desktop\chrome1.lnk" $WScriptShell = New-Object -ComObject WScript.Shell $Shortcut = $WScriptShell.CreateShortcut($ShortcutFile) $Shortcut.TargetPath = $TargetFile $Shortcut.Arguments = $args $Shortcut.Save()

RE: Looking for a Career Path
If you don't want to deal with a lot of customers/users, you will probably want to try to hit the engineer level in my opinion. I spend a lot of time on the front lines, as it were. I still don't entirely know which direction I am pursuing in the IT field, but I am keeping wide open to suggestions.
Even for non-customer facing, IT is a wide field. You can be a programmer, an engineer, system admin. When I was focusing on certs, I was intending to get a cert for A+, Network+, and Security+. That is where I intended to start, and that will almost certainly help you to get a foot up.
Hope this helps.

RE: What SIP Hard Phones Do You Use?
I use a Yealink T22P. I've recently seen some settings with the Polycom phones and do not like the complexity of changing some things, but I have not personally used them to be certain. I do see a lot of Yealinks out and about.

RE: Overzealous Prosecutor = Ruin 18 year olds life
I see things like this often in my state. For example: http://www.mlive.com/news/saginaw/index.ssf/2014/02/14-year-old_lil_carl_howard_se.html
It's still pretty controversial as to whether or not that should stick in this link, but what kind of society do we live in now that a pocketknife can get you brought up on felonies and 14 year olds are charged as adults?I live in a very rural area myself. Small town. In high school one of my history teachers was once attempting to open a package that had the plastic seal on it. After a second of struggling he looks out to the class, says 'does anyone have a pocketknife?' 'right here!' the teacher grabs the knife, opens it, uses it, closes it, and hands it back. 'Thanks!', pauses for a minute, then says to the class, 'I guess it's a good thing that no one had a pocketknife, right?'

RE: How did you get started in IT?
In about the middle of junior year, I was starting to realize that I was a pretty smart person and started to get more involved in my school and such. I also happen to be cursed when it comes to technology( ask @ajstringham ) So things would break around me. After a while, considering I was broke, I started to learn to fix these things. Then, in senior year, teachers at the school started calling me out of classes to fix their tech. Then, a job was posted to the school for a part time tech and the counselor informed me immediately and let me submit my resume before she even posted it. Got the job the next day.

RE: Open Source PBX vs Proprietary Question
While I have only a little experience with proprietary systems, I can tell you that Asterisk systems are pretty easy to administer in an overall sense. You've got countless options- Elastix, FreePBX straight, PBX in a Flash, etc. Extension creation takes 30 seconds, and modifying current settings is pretty intuitive from the interface.
Could you give me some examples on what administering a proprietary system like that is like?
