From Fedora 30, installing

. PHP-FPM is a weak dependencies for php and also nginx-filesystem gets installed too.
haha weak dependency, no body called me that in years.

RE: Nasty PHP7 remote code execution bug exploited in the wild (Nextcloud specifically called out)
Dam but it only affects NGINX with PHP-FPM
I thought FPM should be more secure cause it allows PHP to run standalone, but at the same time I dont know why it is PHP vulnerability since it only affects Nginx with FPM and not Apache with FPM, if i was fair man i would put the blame 50/50

Btw debian latest stable has php 7.3
Debian is an odd duck, though, because it has releases, but no support. So it has nothing like an LTS as it has no support.
You dont need support when the the distro is focused on one thing to be free and libre and add packages, in Debian there is no agendas, no goals , it is just distro with apt-get that it. I will never use it for desktop (cause it is too plain and basic for that), but for servers that is another story.

@IRJ said in Linux OS Thoughts?:
S is EoL'd very few people are going to be going back to check for things they've missed in those releases.
I get the point Scott is making with this one"What if we created a new release cycle between LTS and upstream ?"
And that is how a failure gets born, introducing Centos Stream.
Listen if you want latest and greatest you need to have ton of coders working on it.
Btw debian latest stable has php 7.3
and ubuntu only recently got 7.3 in there eoan release, yes debian actually moved faster with version 10 than of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.So it all depends on the OS vendor and mythodology. which is something you will pick on after you follow the managment of those distros
RHEL = enterprise market, slow and steady and low update releases.
SUSE = SAP focused with enterprise options and wants to be one stop shop for everything
Ubuntu= reinvent all technolgoies the "CANONICAL" wayDebian = sitting idle and silent the quiet guy that has been stable and maybe the best OS ever really, cause the idea and focus of it have not changed for 20 years, it is FOSS OS with sophisticaed package managment and many packages no bloat or marketing.

RE: Linux OS Thoughts?
Oh no not thing again ...
If you want to work with Linux, and you live in US/Canada go with Fedora to learn RHEL.
If you want to enjoy and have fun go with openSUSE, it will surprise you how much polished and underrated just cause it is from EU.

I made this post a couple of moths ago and it's the same as what you are seeing.
@Pete-S said in Are Minimal installs really better?:
If we are talking Fedora Minimal Install then it's actually a pretty bloated affair compared to others like Debian for instance (only the base system, no extras). Even Fedora Custom Operating System option, which I assume is smaller than minimal, is bloated in comparison.
I have both installed on my test host in the latest versions and looking at dmesg Debian boots in 2.7 secs compared to Fedora's minimal/custom 9.7 secs. After boot Debian uses ~80MB RAM while Fedora uses ~240MB RAM. Fedora of course has more services running by default and pulls in more packages during install. Even Fedora Server's netinstall disk image is about twice the size.
Totally agree with you about Debian.
This is Debian 10 with everything unselected during the install on KVM

Interesting, thanks. sorry i missed that.
Debian rocks, also JeOS, i think that also is great for KVM guests, especially limited RAM ones.

RE: Newb: Looking for advice.
Like your shop what do you rely on IT wise ?
and yup i mean both
off prem and on premgather that info and paste it here, and we will suggest for example
- internal web server or lamp stack running nextcloud software
- NAS device

RE: Newb: Looking for advice.
Well what services do you use currently ?
Cause cloud for file sharing and storage can be great option. Also for small web sites.
Also CEOs just read email about Amazon and bam they are hooked like 7yr old kid, and they want to move everything to it, cause they read in the email that 33% cost reduction, 20% efficiency increase, 50% penis growth
and they actually believe itEver thought how come the word penis is pronounced peanus but we type it penis

RE: How can I tell if one of our linux boxes is a spam generator?
@WLS-ITGuy said in How can I tell if one of our linux boxes is a spam generator?:
Single box. It is our Moodle Server which sends email through class discussions.
hmmm check nload perhaps, i am guessing the machine with many network activities is the suspect, that said spams are texts so, also there are alot of rootkits scanners for linux free and in package system, good chance to test them.
-
RE: UFW rules question
Look good to me .
If you need to send emails from the box itself you need to open additional, but usually you rely on third party services for that like SMTP2GO or SendGrid and for that you dont need to open any additional ports.
I used to firewall port SSH but then i was like I would like to work on machines from anywhere, so I just enable strong SSH auth based security.
However both approaches will work, the thing is imagine if you want to connect on that machine on emergency, you have to go to the 74 IP or vpn to it.

RE: Centos 8 uses ~250MB ram after fresh install
Same thing actually weird, maybe KVM is better at RAM cause it shares the RAM or compresses it , I heard about this feature, it would be interesting if this it.
wait a second your running 25 tasks and i am running 30 ? what gives. I am running minimal install . oh maybe it detected vmware stuff and installed vmtools and agents and that is causing . yup i remeber now it installed those agents
do disabled vmtoolsd and rebooted same thing, it seems it is what it is
