RE: new laptop keeps bringing down our networkposted in IT Discussion
@JaredBusch Good ideas. The testing is going to have to wait until Scott is home, because I don't have an ethernet cable to use on the main floor, and I don't like being down in the basement at night when he's not home, cause the dark is creepy. I've never tried plugging this laptop in so I should probably start being scientific and techie about this whole troubleshooting thing.

Everything comes back online when the page finishes loading, or when I shut my laptop down, which I do when I've waited a bit and everything is still down.

I'm pretty sure everything is DHCP, although now I'm wondering about the Netgear toaster. It's most noticeable when the kids are streaming something on the WiiU and I click on a link on my laptop and bam, there goes everybody's connection. I don't think anything but the toaster is using anything but WiFi at the moment.

Yes, Ubiquiti. I'm not sure of the passwords and such, so going to have to wait until Scott gets home for that.
Malware scan came up clean.

Oh whatever, AJ. MSE and Defender are fine.
I'm running Malwarebytes now. A malware issue didn't occur to me, since it's been like this since I started using it.

Every device in the house goes offline, sometimes just until a page loads, sometimes until I shut the laptop down.

My new little laptop is great, except for one little detail: every time I use a browser, it brings down our whole network. Help!

Are you doing this from the GUI or from PowerShell?

I'm still liking it, although I occasionally wish it had a little more oomph, mostly, it serves my purposes well. If I really needed a faster machine for a specific task, I could just switch to one of our desktops. I really do love how lightweight it is. I've missed that while using the 15" monster.

@thecreativeone91 Yup, my 15" is just too heavy, and gets too hot for comfortable couch use. This laptop has a vent on the bottom, but because it's small, I'm able to balance it on one leg, and leave the vent uncovered.

I could not help but laugh at the end when he said "Bracing!" I was so good taping the rest of it, but that was just classic, unscripted Scott Alan Miller, lol.

And I'm posting this from it! My thoughts so far: the touch screen is pretty handy for accessing Win 8 Start menu options, instead of moving the mouse around. I think that a lot of things are going to be easier with a touch screen, some things not. I love its teeny size for working from the couch, which I normally do during the day while homeschooling our girls. It's going to take a little while to get used to the compact keyboard, but that's to be expected with a laptop of this size.
As a reminder, here's the laptop Scott bought me:
