I have uverse and am contemplating dropping the tv side. Now that I have a roku, and my tv is hooked up to my network and have plex fully running I am starting to see that I don't really need cable. Most channels I watch are available somewhere and the shows that are on discovery I am sure I can find somewhere else.

Ah yeah. Is that the same guy consider buying "new" MS OS instead of reusing what they have and spending instead of spinning down?
That be the one. Joke thread that should be shut down after all the talk about using cracked software.
that i agree with, how can this thread still be active with that kind of attitude and downright admitting to using cracked software both at home and in a professional setting?

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
currently reading an interesting post in SW about a company that went bankrupt and this guy is saying they run cracked software, all i can say is wow.....

RE: New IT Employee
that is awesome. I have walked into a few situations but there was always another IT employee willing to help. This is my first gig in a small IT department.

RE: What's Your Current Project?
@Dashrender i am willing to pay a little more from here on out than risk having an electrical fire in my house.
edit: according to the documentation i can find from our energies provider, there is no difference in rates between 100 and 200 amp service, the price change comes into effect if you need 3 phase power. -
RE: anyone know how to reslove this message when IE opens?
just so everyone is aware i'm not the only one having this issue. This issue is caused by the patch for the Zero Day bug in IE. Go to:http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29218720-IE-Security-update-for-Internet-Explorer-May-1-2014 and read the bottom of the post. It explains what is going on.

Ouch that sucks for both of you!
Why do you need a 200 amp circuit? I think the default service around here is 100 or 120 amps. I've installed my own 60 amp sub panel in the garage - I can now do nearly anything I want out there, welding, vacumforming, etc.
I've run new power lines and installed the bathroom in my basement all myself (OK some help from a non professional friend), From what we can find it's all in code and has been working great!
Nice thing about where I live - as long as I do the work myself (non professional) I don't need permits for non structural things.I can run normal electrical (re-wiring switches, parsing off rooms to different circuits) all day long, however since they are replacing the entire panel and exterior pole up to the feeder line drop, i am going to let the pro's do it. As for why I am needing this, current estimated usage is right around 90amps, electric oven/cooktop, dryer, a/c. Plus my box is maxed out so no room for expansion which we want to do in a few years as well as the former home owner tripled tapped 1 of the 2 220v 40am breakers with the a/c, dryer and someone pulled a 110v leg off of that. So last summer I had to shut down my a/c at night just to do laundry so i didn't risk a fire. That wasn't fun at all. The cost to have a master electrician come in and replace/upgrade the panel to the newer switch style isn't bad, 100 amps was $1350, 200 amps is $1550. For a difference of $200 i would be stupid not to upgrade.

We tried to do a small project in our Texas house once. They found an electrical problem that resulted in the entire house being required for $10K
ouch, i'm hoping that doesn't happen when we upgrade ours. I'm hoping the inspector just looks at the replacement work and not the entire system.

RE: What's Your Current Project?
well let's see the joys of being a home owner, next week having the electrical panel upgraded to new breakers and 200 amp service (currently on push lock breakers and 100 amp) and this year looking at having to replace the 10 year old roof because the former home owner was a cheap sob. So cheap that the starter row was put on incorrectly, no ice and water shield and so on so when the snow melted we had water coming in through the windows. Oh and to top it off we have to replace the biggest window the in house that is going to cost $3,000. Oh joy. edit forgot to add that we have lived in the house for just over a year now.

It's far more than work. Life is connected today. The idea isn't just disconnecting from work but from life. I like my life, I'm not looking to escape it.
One of the things I have worked hard to do is to love my job as well as have my job and life be tightly integrated. Disconnecting from one means disconnecting from the other.
See I love being connected but if i'm going on vacation i want to leave all of that behind and just decompress. Go old school if you will where the only way to get in contact with me is by calling the resort I am staying at. When I am in Aruba, my phone is off and in the safe. If there is an emergency our parents know where to get a hold of us. Granted I am married and don't have any kids so that might be the deciding factor here.

my dad is like that where he cannot disconnect for any length of time. When he goes on "vacation" to aruba he connects home via vpn and works 4-5hrs per day. I try to cut him off but he just can't let things go. Granted he was a small business owner at the time, now he works for a different company so we will see this year what he does.
It's completely different when you OWN the company or are some very high position in the company versus being the IT guy. In my case we have a consulting company on standby for when I'm unavailable or need help.
Yes. At VP or higher, the company pretty much owns you.
I am the IT guy for the company (obligated since he is my father) and i tell him i won't help him until he gets back. It is the son in me that is doing that so he actually relaxes. He then tends to find his own ways around it and i end up spending a weekend undoing those loopholes. So in reality i should just help him so i don't create more work for myself
